MADISON, WISC. - Nearly three weeks after suffering their worst of the season, the Madison College baseball team took full advantage of a chance at redemption with an 8-2 victory over Triton College on Tuesday at
Robin Roberts Field. The WolfPack, who are ranked #1 in the
NJCAA Division II Poll for the third consecutive week, rallied from an early two-run deficit before putting together a five run seventh inning to pull away. The win pushes the Pack's current win streak to eight straight games, while also advancing their lead over the Trojans in the all-time series to 26-21.
Triton College (12-14) was able to produce a single run in the first and third innings against starter
Jacob Wilde.
The lead would not last long as the WolfPack scored a run in each of the next four innings. Catcher
Eduardo Saucedo used a sacrfice fly to drive in the first run in the fourth, and
Brady Jurgella's triple to right field scored
Gabe Roessler to even the score at 2-2 one inning later.
The home team took the lead in the sixth thanks to a lead-off home run by
Spencer Bartel. The outfielder from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, now boasts two homers on the season and four for his career.
The game changed in a big way in the seventh inning as the WolfPack used four walks, two hits, an error, and a dropped third strike to generate five runs and an 8-2 lead.
Jake Nelson and Saucedo went back-to-back with run-scoring base hits to cap the scoring.
Eli Hoyt (3-0) was credited with the win in relief, working the final four innings and keeping the Trojans scoreless on five hits and a pair of walks. He struck out four after taking over for Wilde, who left the game with the score tied at 2-2. Wilde gave up two earned runs, five hits, and a walk, while striking out three in his five innings on the hill.
Bartel finished with just one hit, but scored a team-high three runs and drove in one. Nelson, an infielder from Altoona, Wisconsin, was tops with three hits and drove in a run. Lead-off hitter
Eli Kramer went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Saucedo had a hit and two RBI, while Roessler registered a hit and two runs scored.Â
