MADISON, WISC. - Thursday's Region 4 baseball doubleheader between Madison College and Black Hawk College finished with a dramatic walk-off win as catcher
Eduardo Saucedo came through with a clutch game-winning hit to cap a two-game sweep for the number one team in the nation. The WolfPack pulled away late in the opener and walked off with a 10-0 victory in five innings, before rallying from a two-run deficit for a 3-2 decision in the finale at
Robin Roberts Field. With the win, the Pack now boasts a season-best ten-game win streak, while also pushing their win streak over the Braves to five consecutive and the head-to-head series to 23-13.
Game #1: #1 Madison College 10, Black Hawk College 0 (5 innings)
The WolfPack broke a scoreless game in the third inning when, with runners at first and second, first baseman
Gunnar Doyle laid down what was intended to be a sacrifice bunt. The Braves third baseman threw the ball over the first baseman's head and allowed
Eli Kramer and
Gabe Roessler to race all the win for a 2-0 lead.
The doors blew open in the fourth inning as they again had the bases loaded with nobody out for Kramer, who drove in
Jake Fulton with a sacrifice fly to center. Two batters later, Doyle singled in
Gabe O'Brien for a 5-0 advantage. Storbakken made it an eight-run edge with on swing, pounding a three-run home run on a 1-1 offering to boost his team lead in that category to five total homers this season.
The game ended in the fifth as Madison College secured a ten-run lead after Roessler doubled to left to plate Kramer, and Doyle added the final tally with a run-scoring single through the left side.
While the offense was doing its part, starter
Jett Thielke continued his impressive play this season with four scoreless innings to improve to 6-0. The former Bay Port HS athlete struck out three, and allowed two hits and three walks. Thielke's performance drops his earned run average to 1.19 over 30-plus innings, ranking him second in the nation among eligible pitchers in Division II. Freshman
Chris Byhre entered to pitch the fifth inning and retired all three batters in order.
Doyle finished 2 for 3 with two runs batted in and one run scored after sitting out Tuesday's win over Triton College. Roessler, a native of Rockton, Illinois, scored three runs for the third time in a game this season. He also drove in a run as part of a 2-2 effort at the dish. Storbakken, a Sussex, Wisconsin, native, drove in a team-high three runs with his home run swing.
Madison College now owns ten run-rule wins this spring.
Game #2: #1 Madison College 3, Black Hawk College 2
The day's final game played out much differently with five combined runs, and both teams each failing to score when loading the bases with no outs. Black Hawk College (20-12) took out their anger from the previous loss in the first at bat with a lead off home run on the second pitch thrown by starter
Isaiah Cerfus. Three straight walks in the bottom of the second provided the WolfPack its first scoring opportunity, however, a 1-2-3 double play and a strikeout ended the threat. The Braves made it 2-0 in the next half inning with back-to-back hits.
The WolfPack tied the score in the bottom of the third when
Brady Jurgella and
Jake Nelson produced back-to-back singles that scored
Eli Kramer and
Zach Storbakken, respectively. Still even at 2-2 in the sixth, BHC packed the sacks with nobody out, only to have the home team record a strikeout and an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam. Madison College would again load the bases in the home half with one out, only to be turned away with a fielder's choice to home and a line out to center.
Looking to avoid extra innings, Storbakken drew a lead-off walk and was joined on the bases by Jurgella on a bunt single.
Jake Nelson followed with a bloop single to shallow right that pushed Storbakken to third base, however, Jurgella was thrown out at second. That left second year catcher
Eduardo Saucedo an opportunity to be the hero, and the Oregon, Wisconsin, native came through with a ground ball single that got past the first baseman and down the right field line to score Storbakken. It was his lone hit of the game.
Jurgella and Nelson keyed the offensive effort with identical 2 for 3 performances that yielded a RBI, with the former also stealing two bases Six other players each had one hit in the game. Storbakken drew a pair of walks and scored a team-high two runs.
Madison College used a trio of arms to help earn their 23rd consecutive home victory dating back to last season. Cerfus went four innings and limited the Braves to two runs on five hits, while striking out three. Fellow right-hander
Riley LeTourneau worked the next two innings and also struck out three batters. He held the opposition scoreless on a hit and a walk.
Alex Hayes, a left-hander from Muskego, Wisconsin, came in to work the top of the seventh, and surrendered just one hit before recording a K to end the inning. His one-inning of work netted him the win and improved his record to 4-0.
