MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team pushed their win streak to 14 straight games and kept their pursuit of a third consecutive North Central Community College Conference title alive with a sweep of Harper College on Saturday at
Robin Roberts Field. The #1-ranked WolfPack earned wins of 6-2 and 9-6 over the Hawks to increase their lead in the all-time series to 23-5 with five wins in a row.
Game #1: #1 Madison College 6, Harper College 2
The day's first game saw both teams score in the opening inning, with the Hawks using two hits and a walk against starter
Adrian Montilva before a balk against the Harper College pitcher allowed
Eli Kramer to score. The WolfPack pulled away in the second with four runs scored with two outs on the board. The home team loaded the bases with no outs before an error allowed two runs to come in, and
Jake Nelson singled in Kramer and
Zach Storbakken. Following a run in the top of the third, Madison College capped the scoring in the fourth with another run-scoring single from Nelson.
Nelson, a native of Altoona, Wisconsin, finished 3 for 4 with three runs batted in. It marks the second time this season he's had three hits and RBI in a single game. Kramer also had multiple hits, going 2 for 3 and crossed home a team-high two times.
Montilva (1-0) earned his first career victory after limiting the Hawks to two runs on four hits and three walks, while also striking out two in his 2.2 innings of work for the former Madison East HS athlete.
Kellan Short took over for Montilva in the third inning, and the right-hander from New Berlin, Wisconsin, worked two-plus scoreless innings with a strikeout, one walk, and three hits allowed.
Chris Byhre tossed the final two inning and was credited for a hit given up, one base on balls, and a K.
Game #2: #1 Madison College 9, Harper College 6
The day's finale also saw both team's score in the first inning, however, after Harper College (6-29, 0-7) produced one run, the WolfPack exploded for six. With the bases loaded,
Zach Storbakken hit a line drive to left to bring home
Eli Kramer and
Gabe Roessler. Later in the inning, back-to-back doubles by
Carter Stebane and
Gabe O'Brien each resulted in a pair of runs coming in.
The Hawks continued to fight, narrowing the gap to 6-4 after plating a run in the second and two more in the third. A two-out rally in fourth added two runs to the Madison College (28-3, 7-1) tally thanks a two-run single to left by
Brady Jurgella. Leading 8-5,
Gunnar Doyle and Roessler registered the final run in the sixth as the former drove in the latter.
Doyle and Roessler each finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Doyle also had a RBI. Storbakken and Stebane both tallied two runs batted in and a run scored on one hit.
Starter
Spencer Buskager (3-0) remained undefeated on the year with a five-inning effort that saw him strike out four batters and allow five runs on seven hits and five walks.
Charlie Campbell relieved him for the final two innings and fanned three batters while giving up a run on two hits and a walk.
