RIVER GROVE, ILL. - Eleven days removed from their final game played in Arizona, and following back-to-back cancellations of scheduled doubleheaders against Region 4 opponents, the Madison College baseball team finally returned to action Tuesday with a trip to Triton College for a single, nine-inning game. That game, however, would end early with an 11-0 setback in seven innings as the Trojans took advantage of three big innings to take down the #2 WolfPack, who were unable to play a game during the week they were tied atop the
NJCAA Division II Poll.
The WolfPack appeared headed in the right direction to start the game, loading the bases on the first three batters, but no runs were produced. A
Cameron Dupont double in the second again put a runner in scoring position with one out, but the first year designated hitter was stranded on second.
Through three-and-a-half innings, the game was scoreless and starter
Luke Hansel (1-1) had allowed only a hit and a walk. That changed in the bottom of the fourth when back-to-back singles were followed by a run-scoring wild pitch and the Trojans took a 1-0 lead. Before the half-inning ended, the home team plated five additional runs on an error and three hits, including a pair of doubles.
Two more errors and two singles added up to three more runs in the Triton College fifth inning, which was followed by a two-run sixth. Madison College did have two runners on with on out in their half of the sixth, but a double play ended the inning. They did not threaten in the seventh before the game was called due to the run-rule.
Hansel suffered his first loss of the season after going four innings and allowing six total runs, two of which were earned, on six hits and a pair of walks. He also struck out four.
Jacob Wilde came in for two innings and surrendered one earned run, five total runs, and five hits, while fanning three.
At the plate, Madison College generated just four hits against Trojans pitching, with Dupont,
Gabe Roessler,
Gunnar Doyle, and
Zach Storbakken each picking up a base hit.
Triton College (7-9) has won five of the last six meetings, while the 'Pack still owns a 25-21 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams are slated for a doubleheader at
Robin Roberts Field on April 19.
