PALATINE, ILL. - The four-time defending North Central Community College Conference women's soccer champions improved to 2-0 in league play as Madison College, ranked #10 in the
NJCAA Division III Poll, defeated Harper College 5-1 on Wednesday. All-American
Angelina Perez tallied two goals in the win, while the WolfPack defense limited the Hawks to two shots on goal throughout the match. The victory puts the all-time series at 9-4-1 in favor of Madison College, who has earned victories in seven of the last eight meetings.
Perez, a sophomore forward/midfielder, began the first of two scoring surges in the match with a 9' scoring strike off an assist from fellow second year forward/midfielder,
Elizabeth Foye. Harper College (1-0, 0-0) responded with an equalizer in the 11'. The tie score did not last long. Lodi, Wisconsin, native
Taylor Peterson took a pass from Perez and buried the game-winner in the back of the net. It was the third goal for the freshman midfielder.
Leading 2-1 entering the second half, the visiting WolfPack went on another scoring binge to pull away from the Hawks.
Karmen Smyth, a first year midfielder from Stoughton, Wisconsin, tallied her fifth goal of the year with a assist from
Julia Aulik. The 51' goal was followed in the 64' when Aulik was on the business end of a
Monica Tapia-Gutierrez pass and kicked it past the Harper College goalkeeper. The final 5-1 differential came 40 seconds later with Perez netted her tenth goal of the season to remain in the top three in the nation for scoring, as well as top five for points with 23. She has scored a goal in four straight matches. Aulik registered another assist on the play for her first career multi-assist game.Â
Freshman
Hope McFarlin made her return to goalkeeper after missing the previous three matches. The former DeForest Area HS athlete allowed one goal and made one save against just two shots on goal and five shots overall. The WolfPack racked up 13 total shots and put nine on goal.
