ALTOONA, WISC. - Battling a challenging course at
Eau Claire Golf & Country Club, as well as varied weathered conditions from one day to the next, the Madison College golf team struggled to an eighth place finish at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational hosted by UW-Eau Claire on Sunday and Monday. The WolfPack, who failed to post a single round below 80, improved by nine shots from their Round 1 total of 346 to post a 337 over the final 18 for a two-day total of 683.
Madison College, the only two-year school in the entire field, finished ahead of four other teams and was sandwiched between two teams representing Viterbo University. The host Blugolds won the tournament with a 627 total.
The WolfPack were paced by sophomore
AJ Gray with a 163 (+21) total that placed him in a three-way tie for 18th overall after rounds of 11-over 82 and ten-over 81 on the par 71 course. The top-20 finish is the second straight for the former Milton HS athlete. He trailed tournament medalists Matthew Davidson of Edgewood College and UW-Eau Claire's Owen Covey by ten strokes after they tied at 11-over-par 153.
The rest of the 'Pack played within six shots of each other, with freshman
Kaleb Lycke placing 35th with a 173 (+31). The La Crosse, Wisconsin, native signed off on rounds of 88 (+17) and 85 (+14). One shot back and tied for 36th overall was fellow freshman
Jake Rebholz. The product of Verona, Wisconsin, used round of 84 (+13) and 90 (+19) to reach 174 (+32).
Matt Paulson and
Tyler Dahl were two-thirds of a three-way tie for 47th at 179 (+37). The freshmen tandem both made significant improvements from Sunday to Monday, with Paulson shaving 11 shots from a 95 (+24) to an 84 (+13) and Dahl going from 92 (+21) to 87 (+16).

With the Ryder Cup taking over the golf community on Wisconsin's eastern shore, Madison College will travel to
Edelweiss Chalet Country Club on Thursday, September 23 for the Match Play at the Chalet hosted by Clarke University. Play is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
