Sports dynasties come in all forms and legacies, and what the Madison College baseball team has accomplished over the past dozen years certainly fits that bill. On Saturday, the WolfPack (43-12) will make their ninth appearance at the
NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Oklahoma, when they open as the tournament's #5 seed against #4-seeded Kellogg Community College (35-11) at 7:15 p.m.
With the exception of back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017, as well as a season lost in 2020, Madison College has been the class of NJCAA Region 4. Coach
Mike Davenport's program has beaten a steady path to north-central Oklahoma, however, they have returned to Wisconsin with a handful of top five finishes and no hardware. The 2021 edition arrived in Enid with an expectation to change that.
The current WolfPack reached the 40-win plateau by advancing through the Region 4 Sectional, marking their first such season since 2015, when Madison College ended a record-setting run of six consecutive berths to the national tournament. Despite all of that success, including another Division II appearance in 2005 and a Division III berth in 1999, Madison College has been without a national championship since back-to-back-to-back crowns from 1995 to 1997.
To help make that happen, the WolfPack will lean on an offense that has averaged better than 7.3 runs per game, and a pitching staff and defense holding to fewer than 3.5 runs a contest. Freshman third baseman
Zach Storbakken has led Madison College in nearly every offensive category throughout a majority of the season. The Sussex, Wisconsin, native is hitting .409 with 63 hits, including 15 doubles and eight home runs. He ranks second in triples with three behind
Jake Nelson's four, and his 13 stolen bases places him right behind leader
Eli Kramer at 16. Storbakken, however, has seen plenty of his teammates deliver in clutch situations, highlighted by the Region 4 Championship defeat of Black Hawk College that saw the WolfPack generate 17 hits with seven batters enjoying multiple base knocks.
The Madison College arms have been a bit more balanced in 2021. Following a slow start to the year, transfer
Reagan Klawiter has come on strong of late and leads the nation with a 1.47 earned run average over 55 innings en route to a 7-1 record. The Verona, Wisconsin, native is racked up 44 strikeouts and 37-plus innings over his last five outings.
Alex Redman boasts the staff's best record at a perfect 9-0, placing him sixth in the country, and was the winning pitcher with a three-hit effort to send the 'Pack to Oklahoma. Not to be outdone,
Jacob Wilde is 6-1 and owns the team strikeout lead with 67 in his 52.2 innings, and
Luke Hansel is among the top 25 nationally with eight wins. Out of the bullpen, Madison College calls on
Jett Thielke. The closer from Green Bay, Wisconsin, owns the third best save total in the nation with eight.
Saturday's tournament opener will mark the second meeting against the Bruins at
David Allen Memorial Ballpark after the two programs battled to an 8-3 WolfPack win in an elimination game in 2011. The winner this year will advance to play Monday afternoon, while the loser will take the field for an elimination game on Sunday afternoon. Madison College also has a history with many of the team's in the field: #1 LSU-Eunice (1-2), #3 Western Oklahoma State College (1-4), #6 Kirkwood Community College (5-2), and #8 Phoenix College (3-1).
