The foundation was poured several years ago, and year-by-year the Madison College softball team has built higher and higher upon it. The WolfPack added a significant layer in 2018 with a debut appearance and eventual sixth-place finish at the
NJCAA Division II Softball Championships, and in 2019 they are back in Mississippi with plans for another significant addition.
Coach
Leo Kalinowski and company rolled to a 41-10 record on the season, and after earning the top seed in the Region IV Tournament, powered through the postseason for a second straight Region IV title. On display over the course of five playoff wins was a pair of freshman arms that have shouldered the load after the WolfPack lost their entire pitching staff from a season ago, including the program's first All-American,
Alli Walker.
Jordan Martin and
Maddie Fink are both 15-2, putting them in a tie for second in program history for wins in a season. The duo has combined to work 209 innings, roughly 68% of the total innings. Martin, who missed a chunk of the season due to injury has racked up 136 strikeouts and sits nine K's away from breaking Walker's single-season record.
Providing the run support has been the 1-2 punch of freshman
Irene Tomasovic and sophomore
Dany Gumz. Tomasovic has collected 74 hits, leaving her 13 shy of tying the school's single-season record, and is currently riding a 13-game hitting streak. She also leads the team with 56 runs batted in and sits second in runs scored with 45. Gumz provides the most pop in the lineup with a team-high eight home runs, while also setting the pace with 49 runs scored and ranking second in RBI with 54.
The WolfPack have outscored the opposition by nearly five runs per game. Contributing to that impressive stat is the overall team speed Madison College has in their lineup. Led by sophomore
Maegan Brookins, the 'Pack has amassed 137 stolen bases and boasts three players with at least 20 steals.
Madison College started the 2019 campaign with a 4-2 mark - 3-2 against North Central Community College Conference opponents - at the N4C Dome Jamboree. A 10-4 record on their annual Florida Spring Trip had the WolfPack ready to hit the ground running once back from the Sunshine State, however, they would only log two games over three weeks as Mother Nature completely re-wrote the schedule. Once conditions improved, the 'Pack went 20-6 to close out the regular season.
The postseason opened with a resounding sweep of Bryant & Stratton College in a Region IV Quarterfinal series, before posting a 19-1 run differential in three wins to claim the Region IV Tournament title.
Madison College jumped up three spots from 2018 as they were awarded the #8 seed for the national tournament, and will draw a somewhat familiar foe in #9 Johnson County Community College in their opener. The Cavaliers are making their 21st overall appearance and are 24-12 on the year. The two teams met in Clinton, Mississippi, last year in an elimination game, which Madison College won 5-4. The winner will likely get a second round date with top-seed and five-time national champion LSU-Eunice. The loser will drop into the loser's bracket. Both games will take place on Thursday.Â
