WolfPack stretch win streak to 11 with complete game pitching

Sweep of Moraine Valley includes historic win for Matt Hamilton

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team kept its win streak going Thursday with a pair of victories over Region IV opponent Moraine Valley Community College at Robin Roberts Field. Both games saw the WolfPack starting pitcher earn a complete game win, with sophomore Matt Hamilton going the distance in a 6-2 victory in the opener, followed by freshman Taylor Jansen working a full seven innings for a 6-1 decision in the finale. The win by Hamilton is his 14th career victory, moving him into a tie for first in all-time wins in Madison College history. The 'Pack, which is now receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, has won 11 straight games and are now 6-1 all-time against the Cyclones.

Game #1: Madison College 6, Moraine Valley Community College 2 (7 innings)

Matt Hamilton etched his name further into the Madison College baseball, tying Travis Thompson (1995-96) and Dan Schmidt (2013-14) for most career pitching wins in program history, with a seven-inning effort that saw the righthander register a career-high 11 strikeouts. The Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native gave up two runs on four hits and three free passes to first.

The WolfPack broke open a scoreless game in the fourth with three runs. After two walks and a single loaded the bases, second year outfielder Nathan Aide dropped down a bunt that brought in a run on a fielder's choice. Aide later scored on an error by the Cyclones shortstop to make it 2-0. The final run came via a double to right by first year first baseman Luke Malmanger that drove in Lucas Trebian. Moraine Valley tallied their two runs in the top of the fifth to make it a one-run game, but that's as close as the visitors would get. A Nick Gile sacrifice fly and a wild pitch answered those two runs in the home half of the inning, but it was sophomore Jarrett Scheelk that capped the inning with a solo home run to left for his team-leading sixth of the season. The long ball came hours after Scheelk was named the NJCAA Division II Player of the Week for April 8-14.

Scheelk, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, was the lone player with more than one hit in the game, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and batted in. Adam LaRock scored a team-high two runs.

Game #2: Madison College 6, Moraine Valley Community College 1 (7 innings)

Game two featured the second complete game performance of the day, with Taylor Jansen's best showing of the season. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native struck out a career-high seven batters, and was tagged for just one earned run on four hits and two walks to improve to 2-2.

The WolfPack took the lead in the second inning with another three-run frame highlighted by three consecutive base hits. Freshman Pierson Gibis doubled in Henry Henk, which was followed two batters later by a two-run double from Carson Holin. It stayed 3-0 through the fourth when Moraine Valley Community College (12-15) scored its lone run, but the 'Pack got it right back when sophomore Nathan Aide drove in Jarrett Scheelk. In the sixth, a wild pitch and an error allowed Madison College to tack on two more runs to assume their 6-1 advantage.

Holin, a first year outfielder from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, set new season-high's with two hits and two runs batted in. Aide also had two hits, while Gibis posted a hit, a run scored, and a run batted in.
