CHICAGO, ILL. - Wednesday's North Central Community College Conference game at Wilbur Wright College came down to two final shots, and after Madison College's
Adam Anhold made his and the Ram's Antonio Newman missed his, the WolfPack had earned a tough 75-73 road win. Less than a month after the two teams combined for 215 points in a frenetic basketball game, the pace was slowed drastically as the WolfPack big men controlled the action en route to double-doubles for both Anhold and
DeAngelo Jones. The victory gives the 'Pack a season sweep of WWC and a 16-4 edge in the all-time series.
Trailining 71-62 with little more than four minutes remaining, Madison College dug deep for one final push. What resulted was an 8-0 run, highlighted by six free throws and capped by a
Jalen Addison bucket to tie the game at 71. Still even at 73 following a jumper by
Sean Suchomel, Madison College got the ball back with ten seconds to play after a Wilbur Wright College (9-16, 2-7) miss. The ensuing possession went right to Anhold, and the 6'8" forward came through with a thunderous dunk to give the 'Pack the lead, which held up after Newman's missed three at the buzzer.
The back-and-forth contest featured seven ties and seven lead changes. Each team held a seven-point advantage during the first half, with the WolfPack going on top 18-11 early and then falling behind 35-28 before settling for a five-point deficit at the half. The Rams played from in front for most of the second half, with the 'Pack using a 6-0 run to regain the lead with less than nine minutes to play. However, the home team answered with a nine straight points before Madison College mounted their final comeback.
Anhold posted 23 points and a career-best 18 rebounds as part of his fifth double-double of the season. With the 18 total boards, the native of Janesville, Wisconsin, tied for second in program history for most rebounds in a single game. Anhold finished 8 for 12 from the field with a pair of three-pointers and five free throws en route to his ninth game with 20 or more points.
Jones, a freshman from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, established career-high's with 12 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. The 6'3" forward/guard knocked down 6 of 10 shots and pulled in five offensive rebounds. He also tied fellow forward
Mark Simmons for the team lead in steals with four.
Madison College shot 42% overall as they went 28 for 67 from the field, made 5 of 21 (23%) from long range, and converted 14 of 25 (56%) free throws. The Rams were 41% on the day, hit nine 3's to shoot 27% beyond the arc, and buried 10 of 13 (77%) at the stripe. The 'Pack out-rebounded WWC 49-38 and were plus seven in offensive boards, which led to a 19-3 advantage in second chance points and a 42-32 edge in interior scoring.
