Strong second half play keys WolfPack in pair of wins

Winners of four straight, 'Pack hosts #9 Rock Valley for make-up game tonight

PALATINE, ILL. & MADISON, WISC. - Behind a pair of strong second half efforts, the Madison College men's basketball team earned a pair of North Central Community College Conference wins over the weekend with a 99-79 victory at Harper College on Friday and an 85-80 decision against the College of DuPage during Saturday's 13th Annual Jam the Gym event. The WolfPack closed out the road portion of their regular season schedule with a 6-6 mark, including a 4-2 record on their recent six-game road trip. Saturday's win opened a key four-game homestand to wrap up the regular season, as the 'Pack will play six games over the final 11 days and currently own a four-game win streak that matches a season-high.

Friday, Feb. 8: Madison College 99, Harper College 79

For the third time in five years, the WolfPack earned a sweep of the regular-season series with Harper College (3-22, 2-7), and did so despite trailing at halftime. The two teams traded leads and ties throughout the bulk of the first half before the Hawks owned the advantage for the final 8:30 minutes and sat on top 43-38 at the break. Not long into the second half the momentum shifted and Madison College put together a 12-0 run that triggered a 61-point half. An 8-0 surge gave the 'Pack their first double-digit lead, which grew when the visitors ended the game scoring 15 of the final 20 points.

Freshman Adam Anhold earned his third consecutive double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds. The former Janesville Craig High School standout also set a career-high with five blocks. Sophomore Alex Easterday hit a pair of three-pointers and made 8 of 10 free throws to reach 18 points. First year forward Mark Simmons led the contributions off the bench with 13 points and nine boards, and Jalen Addison added ten points. All 11 Madison College players saw time and were able to score in the game.

The WolfPack wore out a path to the free throw line, setting season-high's with 32 makes on 49 attempts, while also shooting 41% overall and making 7 of 21 (33%) beyond the arc. Interior scoring favored the 'Pack by a 44-28 margin en route to improving their all-time record against Harper College to 14-10.

Saturday, Feb. 9: Madison College 85, College of DuPage 80

Madison College was back on the court the following afternoon with their first home game since January 12. Down 12-6 in the first three minutes, the WolfPack responded after a timeout by coach Jamal Palmer with a 14-0 run to take and eight-point lead. The Chaparrals (4-19, 3-9) answered and regained the advantage a few minutes later, however, three-point shots by Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, natives Sean Suchomel and DeAngelo Jones bookened a 9-2 burst that gave the 'Pack a four-point edge at the half. The home team continued to grow their lead in the second half, reaching a 74-55 differential with less than eight minutes remaining. DuPage refused to go down without a fight, chipping away at the deficit until a 9-2 push in the final two minutes made it a four-point game with 40 seconds left. Madison College milked the clock and Suchomel iced the game with a free throw in the final few seconds.

Freshman transfer Adam Anhold was the team's top scorer for the fifth consecutive game, amassing 17 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Suchomel had 15 points, to go along with team-high's of nine rebounds and five assists for his best statistical game in nearly a month. Fellow second year guards Nathaniel Buss and Jalen Addison contributed 11 and ten points, respectively.

Madison College finished the game shooting 42% overall, 33% (7-21) from long range, and 62% (18-29) at the free throw line. They also forced 14 Chaparrals turnovers, which turned into a 20-13 advantage in points off turnovers. The home team was plus-13 in bench scoring and six points better in points in the paint. The 'Pack has won eight in a row over COD and boasts a 15-10 lead in the all-time series.
