Second quarter surge sends WolfPack to win over Trojans

Lee's career-best double-double puts 'Pack within reach of ten N4C wins with finale Saturday

MADISON, WISC. - Shaquita Lee and the Madison College women's basketball team avenged a prior loss to Triton College on Wednesday night with an 87-71 victory at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium in the penultimate game of the regular season. The sophomore set new career-high's in points and rebounds as she keyed a second quarter rally to give the WolfPack its 18th win in 21 all-time meetings with the NJCAA Division II Trojans. The win also puts the 'Pack one win away from posting their third consecutive 10-win season in North Central Community College Conference play.

Triton College (17-11, 9-4) used stretches of six and seven consecutive points to lead by a 24-18 count after the first quarter. The game changed completely in the second quarter as the WolfPack used a 9-2 run to go up one and eventually outscore the Trojans by 11 over the ten minute period to own a 45-40 halftime edge. The momentum carried into the second half, where eight straight points by Aniah Williams to stretch the lead to double-figures going into the fourth quarter. The Trojans got as close at nine points with the first basket of the fourth, but the 'Pack answered right back and went on to lead by as many as 18 points.

Lee, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, poured in 36 points and collected 18 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. The 5'8" guard knocked down 13 of 21 shots and 10 of 12 free throws en route to the fourth-highest scoring game in program history. Lee's outstanding night left her two assists shy of a triple-double with a team-high eight assists and four steals. She now owns two performances of 30 points or more, and eight that have reached the 20-point plateau.



Williams, a freshman guard, dropped in 25 points, connecting on two 3-pointers as part of a 9 for 23 effort overall and five made free throws. Williams, who also had seven rebounds and four assists, has now scored 20 or more points in 13 of the last 17 outings.

Tianna Sackett registered her third double-digit scoring game in the last six contests with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds. 

The 'Pack made 33 of 66 shots to finish 50% or better for the third time in 2018-19, while also going 19 for 26 (73%) at the charity stripe.

Madison College (18-7, 9-4) will play its final regular season game to wrap up a four-game homestand on Saturday, February 16 against in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College (7-20, 4-9). The WolfPack have won four of the last five meetings, including a 76-61 decision last month, and own a 72-13 lead in the all-time series. Game time at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium is at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday will also Sophomore Day with a three-member Class of 2019 being recognized during halftime of the women's game.
