WolfPack overcome slow start to earn second straight win

Four score in double-figures as Madison College win three of four quarters

DIXON, ILL. - The first ten minutes did not go as planned Tuesday night, however, the Madison College women's basketball team made sure the next 30 minutes did as they rallied from an early deficit to notch a 78-62 win at NJCAA Division I Sauk Valley Community College. The WolfPack's second win in a row saw four players score in double-figures, with three of the four setting new season or career high's for points. The win is the fourth straight for the 'Pack against the Skyhawks, who still lead the all-time series by a 19-15 count.

Neither team was able to score for the game's first three minutes, and with the score sitting at 5-4 in favor of the home team with three minutes left in the first quarter, Sauk Valley Community College (0-3) pulled away with 13 straight points. The WoflPack's lowest scoring quarter of the season was quickly forgotten when the visitors began the second quarter with their only three-pointer of the game from freshman Amber Sue Udelhoven. Still down 15 with six minutes left in the half, Madison College seized the momentum with an 18-4 surge that momentarily gave them a one-point lead before settling for a 27-26 deficit at halftime. That run was ignited by consecutive baskets from freshman Kyianna Baker, and also included seven by sophomore Aniah Williams.

The two teams went back-and-forth throughout most of the third until the 'Pack closed the quarter with an 11-2 burst. The advantage remained in double-digits throughout the fourth quarter, and peaked at 19 on two occasions.

Williams went 8 for 17 from the floor and connected on 8 of 13 at the free throw line en route to a season-high 24 points. The guard from Beloit, Wisconsin, also had three assists, two rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

Freshmen Karlee Van Gysel and Udelhoven each poured in 14 points. Van Gysel, who had just seven points total in the first three games combined, shot 4 for 8 overall and hit on 6 of 7 at the charity stripe. The Fall River, Wisconsin, native also had five rebounds, three assists, and a team-best five steals. Udelhoven also tallied her first career game with ten or more points as she came off the bench to bury 6 of 12 field goal tries with one 3-pointer and a free throw.

Baker put together a second straight double-double performance with ten points and 12 rebounds. The former Stoughton High School athlete has reached ten boards in three games and is averaging 10.3 per game.

Madison College racked up a 19 for 27 (70.4%) day at the free throw line, which helped make up for a 1 for 13 (7.7%) effort beyond the arc. They were 29 of 68 (42.6%) overall and posted a season-low 24 turnovers. The visitors also owned a 34-22 edge in points off turnovers, a 9-6 lead in second chance points, and a 48-30 advantage in interior scoring.
