GALESBURG, ILL. - Their play Saturday may have been erratic at times, however, it was good enough for the Madison College women's basketball team to pick up a third consecutive victory with a 65-54 decision at NJCAA Carl Sandburg College. Freshman
Kyianna Baker posted her third straight double-double and sophomore
Aniah Williams once again paced the WolfPack in scoring. The win also extends a win streak for the 'Pack over the Chargers to three in a row and wins in four of the last five meetings as the all-time series is now even at 4-4.
The odd-numbered quarters were unkind to the visiting WolfPack as they were outscored 16-9 in the opening quarter and 13-7 in the third quarter, but the second and fourth quarters proved to be extremely beneficial with scoring advantages of 25-12 and 24-13, respectively. Madison College opened the contest with an 8-5 lead before Carl Sandburg College (1-3) rattled off 16 of the next 17 points. Sophomore
Lilly Dorman kicked off the second quarter with an early jumper and Williams scored five straight points to ignite a 12-0 run. The 'Pack took a six-point edge into halftime, but it was the Chargers that surged in the third with a 8-0 run to regain the lead. Fortunately, the WolfPack hung tough and were tied as the game moved to the fourth quarter where they built a 16-point lead on the backs of a 15-2 burst.
Williams knocked down a season-high three of her five made field goals from beyond the three-point arc, going 5 for 11 overall and 3 of 7 from distance as part of a 17-point performance. The 5'8" All-America guard also added a 4 for 6 effort at the free throw line, six rebounds and three steals.
Baker, a 5'8" guard from Stoughton, Wisconsin, set career-high's with 11 points and 13 rebounds in her third double-double in five games. She was 4 of 9 overall and 3 for 3 at the charity stripe, and three of her boards came on the offensive end en route to helping her net a fourth double-digit rebounding total so far this season.
Amber Sue Udelhoven rounded out the double-digit scoring with ten points off the bench. The freshman guard from Potosi, Wisconsin, buried both long-range shots she attempted as part of a 4 for 7 day from the field. Dorman ended the contest with nine points and eight rebounds.
Madison College controlled the glass by a 47-32 margin over the Chargers, leading to a 10-7 advantage in second chance points and a 26-18 lead in points in the paint. The WolfPack continued to struggle with turnovers, posting 29 miscues that lead to CSC owning a 27-9 edge in points off turnovers.
