MADISON, WISC. - With all eight players scoring and five reaching double-digits in the points column Saturday at
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, the Madison College women's basketball team picked up an 81-66 over NJCAA Division II Carl Sandburg College. A 9-0 run that spanned from the first and second quarters gave the WolfPack the lead for good en route to earning a third straight win overall and a second consecutive win over the Chargers, who lead the all-time series by a 4-3 count. The 81 points scored is the most by Madison College in a game this season.
Tied at 18 with one minute and 23 seconds left in the first quarter, Madison College began to pull away following an and-one opportunity for freshman
Johnetta Walters. Baskets by
Evonne Strahm and
Tianna Sackett put the 'Pack up by seven heading into the second quarter, where they made it a 27-18 lead with another jumper from Walters. A little more than halfway through the quarter and the WolfPack owned the game's first double-digit lead before settling for a 46-38 advantage at the half. Another seven-point surge early in the third pushed the differential to 11 points before it reached a max of 16 on three occasions throughout the fourth quarter.
Guard
Aniah Williams knocked down 6 of 14 shots with one 3-pointer and four made free throws to reach a game-high 17 points. The freshman from Beloit, Wisconsin, has been in double-figures every game so far and is averaging 17.8 per game. She also had two rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. Fellow first year
Evonne Strahm was right on her heels with 16 points off 5 for 11 shooting and a 6 for 14 effort at the line. Strahm, a former Barneveld High School athlete, also secured seven rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block.
Three others made their way past ten points for the WolfPack, with sophomore
Tianna Sackett and Walters each contributing 13 points. Sackett missed just two shots as she went 5 for 7 overall with a three-pointer and two made free throws, while collecting five rebounds and two steals. Walters came off the bench to convert 5 of 9 field goals and all three attempts at the charity stripe, in addition to racking up three boards, one assist, and one steal before fouling out. Jayla Connor earned her first career double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds, netting all but two rebounds during the second half. Aside from leading the rebounding effort, the former Madison East High School athlete was tops on the team with two 3-pointers, four assists, and five steals.
Madison College finished with their highest team shooting percentage of the season at 48.3% after making 29 of 60 field goal attempts, while Carl Sandburg (3-3) was 23 of 66 for 34.8%. The Chargers made two more three-pointers on the day, however, the 'Pack was 18 for 33 at the line compared to 13 of 19 for Sandburg. The home team also capitalized on a ten-point advantage in points in the paint and were three-points better scoring off turnovers.

Madison College (3-3) will host Rochester (MN) Community & Technical College (1-1) on Tuesday, November 20 to continue their four-game homestand. In a series that dates back to 1987, the WolfPack own a 21-9 edge over the Yellowjackets, who have won the last two meetings. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. inside
