LASALLE, ILL. - Through 89 minutes of play Wednesday neither the Madison College men's soccer team nor Illinois Valley Community College were able to put a goal on the scoreboard. That changed in the final minute of the Region IV match when the Eagles netted the game-winner to take a 1-0 win over the WolfPack, who have lost three straight matches. The 'Pack had been a perfect 6-0 in head-to-head meetings with IVCC prior to Wednesday.
Madison College struggled to generate offense in the first 45 minutes, posting three total shots with only a
Samuka Toure header and an
Andy Mendez-Maya kick being put on goal. The WolfPack defense held its own during the first half as the teams went into halftime scoreless.
The second half saw Madison College take a more aggressive approach that yielded six more shots on goal, however, all were denied by the Illnois Valley Community College (4-11) goalkeeper. The same could be said about the WolfPack goalkeeper, however, after making seven saves, sophomore
Msughter Abel Dzoho was beaten on the game's final scoring attempt. With 47 seconds left in regulation, the Eagles' Pumi Maphumulo put the home team on top with a successful try that held up for the win.
Madison College finished with 11 total shots and eight on goal, while IVCC registered its eight shots on goal as part of 15 total attempts. Toure, a freshman forward from Madison East High School, led the 'Pack with three shots on goal.
