The NJCAA Region IV Hall of Fame announced its
Class of 2019 Inductees, and it includes one former student-athlete and one national championship team from Madison College. Former WolfPack baseball All-American Tanner Vavra and the 2014 NJCAA Division III Championship women's volleyball team will represent Madison College as part of the 11-member enshrinement class.
Tanner Vavra's arrival on campus coincided with the start of a historic run of success for the Madison College baseball program. The 5'11" infielder from Menomonie, Wisconsin, made an immediate impact in 2010, hitting .407 with 50 hits, 38 runs scored, 28 runs batted in, and 12 stolen bases in his 44 games played. The dynamic freshman also helped secure the WolfPack defense, with a .970 fielding percentage and just five errors as he helped the 'Pack to a 44-15 record that included the program's first Region IV title and subsequent trip to the NJCAA Division II World Series. Vavra's sophomore season put him among the best players in the nation, as he turned in a .421 batting average with 69 hits, 64 runs scored, 25 RBI, and 18 stolen bases. He also managed to improve upon his stellar defensive numbers with a .979 fielding percentage and six errors in 50 games. The WolfPack won their first North Central Community College Conference championship, repeated as Region IV champs, and went on to place third at the DII World Series, which still stands as the best finish in program history. Vavra was rewarded with first team all-conference and all-region honors, and was named NJCAA Third Team All-American. In his two years at Madison College, Vavra was part of 89 wins and left the program ranking fourth in all-time batting average (.415), fifth in runs scored (102), 11th in hits (119), and 13th in stolen bases (30). Following his time with the WolfPack, he went on to play at NCAA Division I Valparaiso University (IN) and was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 30th Round of the 2013 MLB Draft. After five years of playing in the minors, where he reached the High Single-A level, he is now an assistant coach at the University of St. Thomas.
Playing for the first time in program history as defending national champions, the 2014 Madison College women's volleyball was up to the challenge. Under the direction of tenth-year head coach Toby Parker, the WolfPack posted a 30-3 record that included a 9-1 and a third consecutive North Central Community College Conference championship. Madison College swept right through the Region IV Tournament with wins over Joliet Junior College and Rock Valley College to pick up its second consecutive and third Region IV title overall. Back in Rochester, Minnesota, the defending champs showed why they still belonged at the top of the mountain with a three-set win over Fashion Institute of Technology (NY), and back-to-back five set victories against Brookhaven College (TX) and Lorain County Community College (OH) to claim the crown. The decisive fifth set against LCCC in the title game went to an extra point before the 'Pack claimed the 16-14 victory. Sophomores
Katlynn Wirag, who set a school record with 25 kills in the title match, and Hannah Grahn were each named NJCAA First Team All-American. Wirag was also named NJCAA DIII National Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Grahn, Mikayla Nigl, and Allie Lehner. The postseason awards didn't stop there, with Wirag taking home Region IV Player of the Year as one of three players named to the Region IV All-Tournament Team (Grahn & Nigl) and one of two players selected First Team All-Region IV (Grahn). Grahn took home N4C Most Valuable Player honors and was one of five players named to the all-conference team (Wirag, Nigl, Brooke Gilbertson, & Sydney Clarson). Parker swept every possible coaching award, claiming conference, region, and national coach of the year honors. The 2014 women's volleyball national championship remains the most recent national title won by Madison College.
The Class of 2019 inductees give Madison College seven student-athletes and three team enshrinements into the Region IV Hall of Fame after first becoming eligible in 2017.
