ELGIN, ILL. - The Madison College women's soccer team rebounded well from the season's first loss, defeating Elgin Community College in a 5-0 road win in Region IV play on Wednesday. The #9-ranked WolfPack have recorded shutouts in seven of their eight wins and are plus-41 in goal differential. The victory also extends the Madison win streak over the Spartans to four straight since 2015.
Unable to find the net through the game's first 30-plus minutes, the WolfPack finally broke through late in the first half, and it was sophomore striker
Britt Schumann taking control. The DeForest, Wisconsin, native recorded her first goal of the match in the 34' with an assist from freshman
Mary Raemisch. Schumann notched her team-leading 13th goal of the year five minutes later to make it a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore
Peyton Trapino was credited with an assist on the goal, as well as on the next goal by fellow second year midfielder
Esther Noriega right before the half. The two assists give the former Madison College women's basketball point guard 20 helpers on the season, tying her own single season record set in 2017. Noriega, a native of New Glarus, Wisconsin, now boasts five goals overall.
Up three to start the second half, Madison College's dynamic second year duo flipped roles as Schumann set up Trapino for a scoring strike that is her 8th this season. Trapino leads the team with 36 points, eight better than Schumann. The final goal of the contest came off the foot of
Kristina Jensen, with an assist by Noriega. The freshman, also from DeForest, Wisconsin, has scored in two of the last three games.
First year goalkeeper
Kelly Kubicek turned away both shots on goal she faced and was rewarded with her seventh career shutout, one shy of matching the program's single season record. Madison College posted 25 more shots than Elgin (2-4).
