MADISON, WISC. - For just a brief moment Friday, the Madison College women's soccer team found themselves in unfamiliar territory. However, an early one-goal deficit was short-lived and the #7-ranked WolfPack went on to defeat Harper College by a 6-1 final in the home opener at
Irwin A. & Rorbert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The victory improved the 'Pack to 2-0 in North Central Community College Conference play and to 6-3-1 all-time against the Hawks, with wins in four-straight matches in the head-to-head series.
Following two shutout performances to open the season, Harper College (1-2, 1-2) was able to beat the WolfPack defense and first year goalkeeper
Kelly Kubicek for the game's first goal in the 2' of the game. The goal snapped a streak of 167 straight scoreless minutes for the Oregon, Wisconsin, native.
Playing from behind for the first time in 2018, Madison College responded in a hurry as
Peyton Trapino set up
Britt Schumann for the equalizer less than two minutes later. It would be the first of many scoring connections in the game between the two DeForest, Wisconsin, natives.
Still tied as halftime neared, the tandem went on a scoring barrage. Schumann, already the program's all-time leading scorer, converted a pair of Trapino passes for back-to-back scores in the 42' and 44' to put the WolfPack ahead for good. Already with a hat trick, Schumann matched a career-high with her fourth goal of the match.
The WolfPack pulled away even more with two more second half goals, one from second year midfielder
Esther Noriega in the 70' and the other by Trapino one minute later. For Noriega, it was her second goal of the season, while Trapino upped her total to three.
Kubicek finished the game with a season-high ten saves in a match that saw both teams put 11 shots on goal.
