MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team snapped out of a two-game shooting funk to put up its fourth-highest point total of the season Wednesday with an 81-67 defeat of NJCAA Division II Wilbur Wright College inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Winners of four straight, the WolfPack, who are still receiving votes in the
NJCAA Division III Poll, used a 22-7 third quarter to separate from the Rams and remain one game back of #5 Rock Valley College atop the North Central Community College Conference standings.
Leading by a point after seven minutes, Madison College found an offensive rhythm and scored the final nine points of the opening quarter to grab their first double-digit lead of the game at 23-13. Not much changed throughout the second quarter before the WolfPack took a 40-28 advantage at the half. The third quarter opened and closed with successful jumpers by Wilbur Wright College (5-18, 2-9), however, in between was a 22-3 run in which the 'Pack did not allow another made field goal for over nine minutes, scored 15 unanswered points, and connected on 9 of 17 shot attempts and 3 of 4 free throws. With a 29-point lead, Madison College began to sweat some in the fourth quarter as the Rams got extremely hot from long range. The visitors made six of their next ten baskets from three-point territory as part of a 32-point quarter, but the differential never dropped under ten as the 'Pack held on for their tenth consecutive win over WWC.
Once again the sophomore trio of
Cheyanne Jo Udelhoven,
Megan Corcoran, and
Peyton Trapino provided the offensive punch for the WolfPack, scoring 67 of their 81 points. Udelhoven was tops with 26 points, setting a new career-high for the sharpshooting guard. She was 10 of 18 overall and 5 for 9 outside the arc. It's her fifth game with 20 or more points and her seventh straight game with multiple three-pointers, during which Udelhoven is 26 for 54 for 48.1%. The former Fennimore HS athlete also had seven rebounds and four assists.
For the second straight game, Corcoran reached a double-double with 25 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, besting her 20 and 11 statline from the prior weekend at MATC-Milwaukee. Her fourth double-double of the season also included her third straight 20-plus-point game and the 15th of the year. Defensively, Corcoran rejected three Rams attempts to extend a streak of games with a blocked shot to ten, during which she has 26 denials.
Trapino made 8 of 13 shots to tally 16 points for her 13th double-digit scoring effort in 14 games played this season. The 5'5" guard finished with a team-best eight assists, as well as six rebounds and two steals.
Following two games of shooting less than 25% as a team, Madison College busted out to hit 34 of 68 (50%) field goal attempts, while also converting 7 of 8 free throws. The WolfPack held the Rams to 36.1% (26-72) shooting overall and scored a 42-20 advantage in points in the paint to improve to 13-1 all-time against Wilbur Wright, which forfeited the season's prior meeting in January.
