The Madison College men's and women's basketball teams will play their final regular season home games on Saturday, February 10 at
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, however, the day's event will be much bigger than just a pair of North Central Community College Conference games against Harper College.
The WolfPack will honor their graduating players as part of Sophomore Day festivities, with ceremonies at halftime of the women's game and prior to tip off for of the men's contest. Coach
Lois Heeren's team will honor the four-member Class of 2018 featuring
Shakira Burks,
Peyton Trapino,
Cheyanne Jo Udelhoven, and
Megan Corcoran, while interim coach
Bill Kegler's squad will recognize the three-member Class of 2018 of
Tyree Young,
Jezzriah Burton, and
Deshawn Black.Â
In an effort help raise awareness for breast cancer and cancer research, the Madison College women's basketball team is participating in the
Play4Kay initiative. In a sign of support, the team, coaches, and Madison College staff will be donning pink shirts and asking for donations to be sent entirely to the
Play4Kay campaign. Additionally, anyone wearing pink to the game will receive free admission. Madison College will also recognize all cancer survivors in attendance at halftime of the women's and men's games.
Saturday's action against the Hawks will start with a 1:00 p.m. tip for the women's matchup, followed by a 3:00 p.m. contest for the men.
The
Kay Yow Cancer Fund was created by the late North Carolina State University and Hall of Fame Coach Kay Yow. During her battle with cancer she became inspired to do more and believed that uniting players and coaches around the world to raise money by playing a simple game would aid in cancer research, honor survivors, and serve the underserved. The
Kay Yow Cancer Fund is a nonprofit organization committed to raising money for women's cancer research, serving the underserved and uniting others in the fight against cancer. The
Play4Kay program has generated over $5.28-million for scientific research and projects assisting the underserved in ALL women's cancers.
In addition to the national effort, the fight against women's cancer and finding a cure is hitting closer to home as former Madison College WolfPack player Lauren (Lanza) Mytych (2004-06) has been diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. The news comes as the 31-year-old former all-conference guard is pregnant with her second child. Madison College will be hosting the Ballin' for the Cure Benefit 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday, April 28. Competition will consist of four divisions: men's and women's intermediate and advanced. For more information and to register a team, email
