Madison College pitching keys second sweep of Kougars this season

WolfPack allow seven total hits, get boost from Strzelczyk blast in nightcap

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team made it a perfect 4-0 against NJCAA Division I Kishwaukee College this spring after taking both games of a doubleheader at Robin Roberts Field on Thursday. After outscoring the KougarsĀ 10-3 in two wins on March 23, the WolfPack were even better the second time around with victories of 3-1 and 8-0 to push their current win streak to three games.

Game #1: Madison College 3, Kishwaukee College 1

A pair of first inning runs proved to be enough for a win in a tightly contested opener. Following 1-2-3 top of the first by starter Hank Schau, the Madison College offense provide the righthander some early breathing room. An error allowed freshman shortstop Tanner Umentum to reach safely, and two batters later he raced from first to home to score on a two-out double to center by sophomore Chris Lund. Fellow second year Ty JandrowskiĀ followed suit with a double of his own down the right field line and the WolfPack owned a 2-0 advantage.

The Kougars pulled to within a run in the fourth on a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk and a sacrifice. However, Madison College came right back in the bottom half to regain the two-run advantage. Cade Bunnell led off with a two-bagger to deep center, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Bryce Plate.

SchauĀ pitched to four batters in fifth inning before giving way to Jack Eagan in a relief role. Eagan worked the minimum six batters over the two innings - recording two strike outs - to earn his first save of the season. Schau (5-0) remained perfect on the year, winning his fifth consecutive start despite pitching the fewest number of innings of any outing this season. The sophomore struck out four and allowed a single earned run on three hits and three walks. Schau leads the pitching staff in wins and innings.

The game yielded just eight total combined hits with sophomore transfer Chase ScharnekĀ leading the way with two. Chris Lund, Ty Jandrowski, and Cade Bunnell each had an extra base hit. Lund was the lone player with a run scored and one batted in.

Game #2: Madison College 8, Kishwaukee College 0

The offense and defense took another step forward in game two against Kishwaukee College (4-21), a program that coach Mike Davenport played for and coached to a national championship. In the bottom of the first inning, the WolfPack used a trio of walks to load the bases with two out for sophomore DH Carson Carmody. The former Barneveld High School athlete ripped a double to the right field wall that cleared the bases for an early 3-0 edge.

Now pitching with the lead, sophomore starter Sam Lund settled in. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native allowed two hits in the first half inning, then retired 12 straight opposing hitters until giving up a leadoff single to start the sixth. At that point, the 'Pack already owned an eight-run lead. Freshman Tyler StrzelczykĀ crushed a solo home run in the second to make it 4-0. It was the second homer of the season for the Tinley Park, Illinois, native. That same inning Garrett McGraw singled in Sage BruhlĀ for a five-run differential.Ā

McGraw, from Lodi, Wisconsin, drove in another run with a ground out in the fourth to plate Tanner Umentum. And in the fifth, High Point University transfer Nick BlomgrenĀ roped a double to center with Carmody at second base. Blomgren advanced to third on the throw to the plate trying to cut down Carmody, who scored on a barrel roll before the tag. A balk during the next at bat brought Blomgren in to cap the day's scoring.

Four different players registered hits for the WolfPack. Carson CarmodyĀ matched a season-high with three runs batted in while also scoring one. Garrett McGraw scored once and produced two more with his bat. Tanner UmentumĀ led the team with two runs scored.

Sam Lund (4-1) has found his groove after a rough start to the season, winning each of his last four starts. His six innings of shutout baseball gives him an ERA of 1.22 over his last four games. During that span, Lund has also struck out 29 batters Ā - including seven against the Kougars - and walked 11. Freshman Darren Strasburg entered in the seventh and tossed a perfect inning with one strike out to help the 'Pack improve to 31-21-1 all-time against Kishwaukee.

Up next:

Madison College (20-10/3-3) will play in-state and North Central Community College Conference rival Milwaukee Area Technical College (2-16/0-8) on Saturday. Due to field conditions, the doubleheader has been moved from Milwaukee to Robin Roberts Field in Madison - in exchange, the April 27 twin bill has been flipped from Madison to Milwaukee. The WolfPack have had a tremendous run of success against the Stormers, winning 35 straight since a road loss in 2006 that snapped a 45-game streak. Game one will start at 10:30 a.m., with game two to follow at approximately 1:30 p.m.
