BLANKED: WolfPack shut out Milwaukee in both ends of N4C DH

Madison College maintain stronghold of in-state rivalry with 37th straight win

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team continued its dominance of the I-94 rivalry with Milwaukee Area Technical College, shutting out the NJCAA Division III Stormers in both games of a North Central Community College Conference doubleheader at Robin Roberts Field on Saturday. The WolfPack won by scores of 10-0 and 6-0 to push their current win streak to five games, while also extending their win streak over Milwaukee to 37 consecutive games. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played in Milwaukee, however, wet field conditions shifted the game west to Madison. As a result, the Thursday, April 27 twin bill between the two programs will now be played along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Game #1: Madison College 10, Milwaukee Area Technical College 0 (5 innings)

Neither team was able to generate offense in the early going, though Madison College did have a runner at third with one out in the bottom of the first and failed to score. The WolfPack punched through in the third with a two-out rally when sophomores Drew Steinmetz and Ty Jandrowski hit back-to-back singles - with a steal of second by Steinmetz sandwiched in - to make it a 1-0 game. The Stormers nearly pulled even in the fourth, but shortstop Cade Bunnell gunned down a runner at home on a relay from center to keep the shutout intact.

Madison College blew the game open in their half of the fourth, plating five runs on five hits and an error. Bunnell opened with a single, and pinch runner Garrett McGraw eventually scored on a wild pitch. Chase Scharnek make it 3-0 with an RBI double to left that scored Carson Carmody. As the inning went on, Sage Bruhl singled in Scharnek, Steinmetz singled in Bruhl, and Ty Jandrowski's double to right allowed Steinmetz to score from second.

The WolfPack bats finished off the game early with a four-run bottom of the fifth. Zach Bailey hit a two-run single before Scharnek's single to right scored Bryce Plate for a 9-0 advantage. During the next at bat, a Milwaukee wild pitch sent Bailey racing in from third to end the game via the run rule.

Starter Branden Frank (2-2) was outstanding in holding the Stormers lineup to just two hits as he picked up a five-inning, complete-game win. Frank, who grew up in Hartland, Wisconsin, just outside of Milwaukee, struck out five batters and walked two to earn his first win since March 23.

Drew Steinmetz, Ty Jandrowski, and Chase Scharnek all registered two-hit games. Steinmetz, Garrett McGraw, and Carson Carmody all posted three runs scored. And Jandrowski, Zach Bailey, and Scharnek each drove in a pair of runs.

Game #2: Madison College 6, Milwaukee Area Technical College 0

Game two also featured a two-hit shutout, though this time it featured six different pitchers rather than one. First year Connor Fedders started the game and held the Stormers to just one hit, though he did walked four. The Union Grove High School product struck out two over his three innings, but did not pitch long enough to get the win. That honor fell to Riley Pawelski (1-0), who tossed a scoreless fourth inning with a walk and a strike out for his first career win.

Before Pawelski even toed the rubber, he was gifted a 4-0 lead. Logan Michaels drove in Tanner Umentum with a sacrifice fly in the first, and Bryce Plate singled in Chase Scharnek in the second. The third inning saw freshman Caleb Hurt rope a double to left with runners at second and third to score both. Hurt again came through with an extra base hit in the fifth, using an opposite field two-bagger to score Scharnek for a 5-0 edge. The scoring ended in the sixth when Carson Carmody touched home courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Chris Lund.

A parade of pitchers kept the shut out going through the final three innings. Tyler Strzelczyk allowed the only other Milwaukee Area Technical College (2-18/0-10) hit during his 1 2/3 innings, before giving way to Jon-Anthony Caban (1/3 IP), Riley Pelischek (2/3 IP), and Darren Strasburg (1/3).

Ty Jandrowski, Logan Michaels, and Caleb Hurt combined to go 6-for-10 in the game. Hurt drove in a career-best three runs. Chase Scharnek led the way with two runs scored.

Up next:
