MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a pair of North Central Community College Conference victories Tuesday over rival Rock Valley College at Robin Roberts Field. The WolfPack, who earlier in the day learned they were receiving votes in the latest
NJCAA Division II Poll, earned a 7-3 decision in game one, and followed with a 13-1 thrashing of the Golden Eagles in five innings in the finale for their sixth straight win in league play.
Game #1: (RV) Madison College 7, Rock Valley College 3
Madison College began the day with a pair of two-run innings to help set the tone against the visiting Golden Eagles. In the first, a hit by pitch followed by singles from
Tanner Umentum and
Drew Steinmetz loaded bases with no one out. Freshman catcher
Logan Michaels hit into a double play, but it did allow
Sage Bruhl to come in to score from third. Sophomore
Chris Lund then reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which scored Umentum for a 2-0. The Rock Valley miscue would be the first of eight on the day. In the second, the WolfPack again loaded the bases on two singles (
Carson Carmody and
Zach Bailey) and a hit by pitch (
Bryce Plate), and after the next two batters were retired, Steinmetz came through with a two-out single to left that scored Carmody and Plate to grab a 4-0 advantage.
Starting pitch
Jack Eagan was perfect through three innings before issuing a two-out walk, followed by a single up the middle, in the fourth. The Golden Eagles eventually got to Eagan in fifth, taking advantage two walks and a wild pitch to put runners in scoring position. A single and an error on the next at bat cut the WolfPack lead in half, and ended the day for the transfer from Indiana University. Sophomore
Hank Schau entered in relief to end the threat in the fifth.
Yet another error by the Rock Valley shortstop in the bottom half allowed Madison College to put one run right back up on the scoreboard for a 5-2 lead. One inning later, and owning a two-run advantage, the 'Pack added a pair of insurance runs. With the bases loaded - thanks to another RVC error - and with two down, Michaels ripped a single to center that brought in Bruhl and Umentum.
Schau worked a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to close out the win and his first save of the season, as well as his career. The righthander allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk, while striking out two, in his 2 1/3 innings on the mound. Eagan improved to 5-0 in six starts as he limited the Golden Eagles to two runs, one of which was earned, and two hits over four-plus innings. The Wautoma, Wisconsin, native posted five strikeouts to improve his team-leading total to 46 on the season.
Steinmetz went a season-best 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and another scored to pace the offensive attack. Michaels also had a pair of RBI, and Bruhl and Umentum each finished with two runs scored.
Game #2: (RV) Madison College 13, Rock Valley College 1 (5 innings)
The nightcap got out of hand in a hurry as Madison College sent 15 batters to the plate and scored nine runs off four hits, three walks, one hit by pitch, and three Rock Valley errors. Some of the innings highlights included
Bryce Plate driving in two runs with a single down the third base line and
Logan Michaels doing the same two batters later.
The WolfPack made it 11-0 in the second when a fourth Golden Eagles error on a
Drew Steinmetz grounder to short allowed two runs to cross home. Steinmetz added an RBI in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to plate
Tyler Strzelczyk. That same inning a walk of
Chase Scharnek loaded the bases, and with two outs,
Garrett McGraw drew another free pass to first that forced in the final Madison College run.
Staked to the early lead,
Tanner Umentum worked a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but following a fly out and a ground out by the first two hiiters of the inning, the bid for history came up a batter short with a single to right. After a single and a error by Umentum on the next hitter, the Denmark, Wisconsin, native was replaced by
Jon-Anthony Caban, who recorded the game's final out. Umentum (2-2) won his second straight outing with two hits and one unearned run allowed. The transfer from Chicago State University walked three and struck out three.
Plate and Michaels each finished with two hits in the game, with Plate reaching base safely in all four plate appearances. The Kaukauna, Wisconsin, native had two RBI and two runs scored. Strzelczyk and
Zach Bailey both tallied three runs scored, with Bailey's coming on zero official at bats after taking three base on balls. Steinmetz went 0-for-3 in the game, yet still managed to lead the team with three runs batted in.
Up next:
