WolfPack allows just three runs in DH sweep vs. Kishwaukee

Eagan, Frank lead effort in postponed twinbill

DEKALB, ILL. - The Madison College baseball team has its longest win streak of the young 2017 season after taking both games of a Thursday doubleheader against NJCAA Division I Kishwaukee College at Northern Illinois University's Ralph McKinzie Field. The WolfPack won the opener 4-1 behind a complete game effort by Jack Eagan, and completed the sweep with a 6-2 decision in the nightcap for their first three-game win streak of the year. The two-game slate had been rescheduled from Wednesday due to field safety concerns in Malta, Illinois, forcing the teams to relocated to the NIU campus in DeKalb.

Game #1: Madison College 4, Kishwaukee College 1

Several traditions from the recent spring trip to Arizona continued as Madison College took the field for the first time in a game back in the Midwest. One of those trends was scoring first, and doing so in the first inning, which the WolfPack accomplished again in the doubleheader opener against the Kougars. With the bases loaded and two outs, Bryce Plate earned a walk to force in Sage Bruhl, and Zach Bailey did the same to plate Nick Blomgren for an early 2-0 edge.

The other tradition that returned with the team was the stellar pitching of first year Jack Eagan. The Wautoma, Wisconsin, native kept Kishwaukee in check with just six hits allowed over seven innings of work.

The WolfPack added to their lead in the third thanks to a pair of singles. Chris Lund opened the top half with a base knock to center, and after advancing to second on a groundout, was able to score when freshman Garrett McGraw hit a hard ground ball through the right side to make it 3-0.

The lone Kougars run arrived in the fifth on a single and an error, but the 'Pack was able to regain a three-run lead with an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Zach Bailey tallied his team-high second RBI with an opposite field single that drove Chris Lund in from second.

Jack Eagan capped the win with a scoreless seventh, facing four batters. The transfer from Indiana University struck out seven and walked none en route to allowed just one unearned run.

At the plate, sophomore Chris Lund reached base in all four of his plate appearances with two hits and two walks. The native of Stoughton, Wisconsin, also scored a pair of runs. Garrett McGraw matched Lund with two hits.

Game #2: Madison College 6, Kishwaukee College 2 (5 innings)

The twin bill finale required Madison College to rally from a two-run deficit to claim a win five-inning victory. Kishwaukee College (4-11) took put together a two-out rally in the second with two singles and a double to plate two runs against starter Branden Frank.

The WolfPack answered quickly with two runs of their own in the top half of the third. Chase Scharnek began the frame with a lead off walk, which was followed by back-to-back doubles. Kian O'Brien ripped a two-bagger to left to score Scharnek, and then scored himself when Bryce Plate followed with his own double to right field.

O'Brien again provided the big hit in the fourth as Madison College broke the game open. Logan Michaels and Carson Carmody reached base with a singles, and Scharnek loaded the bases with a walk. O'Brien, the former Madison La Follette athlete, cleared them all with a three-RBI double to center, taking third base on a throw home and pushing the score to a 5-2 lead.

A lead off walk in the fifth again allowed the WolfPack to score when Michaels ripped a double to left to drive in Cade Bunnell from second to make it 6-2.

Righthander Branden Frank worked the first two outs of the fifth inning, but was pulled after issuing his third walk of the game. Connor Fedders entered in relief, and after two walks and two wild pitches loaded the bases, induced a ground ball out to Carson Carmody at first base. The game was then called due to lightning and darkness. Frank (1-1) finished with two runs allowed on seven hits over his 4 2/3 innings to pick up his first win of the season. He stuck out four in the game.

Kian O'Brien went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and one scored to pace the 'Pack offense. Bryce Plate and Logan Michaels both registered two hits, and Chase Scharnek had a team-leading three runs scored to help the WolfPack improve to 29-21-1 all-time against coach Mike Davenport's former program.

Madison College (8-6) was scheduled play a doubleheader at Joliet Junior College to open North Central Community College play on Saturday, March 25, however, it was cancelled due to inclement weather. The WolfPack will continue an extended road trip on Tuesday, March 28 at Elgin Community College (4-4). The NJCAA Division III Spartans won two of the three matchups between the programs last year, including a 12-9 decision in an elimination game at the Region IV Tournament. Madison College owns a 23-19 advantage all-time. Game one is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., with first pitch of game two expected at 5:00 p.m.
