Madison College softball team is set to play their home opener at the brand new, 500-seat Robert D. Goodman Softball Field at the
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Sports Complex on the
Madison College Truax Campus. The WolfPack will face a tough test as they host the #2 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II team in the nation, the Kirkwood Community College Eagles, from Cedar Rapids, IA.
The 'Pack was originally supposed to open yesterday against conference opponent, Milwaukee Area Technical College, but rainy and cold weather postponed the game. Madison College is playing softball on campus for the first time since last May as construction on the new complex has been ongoing ever since. A grand opening of the complex will be scheduled later in April.
Madison College and the Goodman Foundation announced on June 3, 2015, an initial $6 million dollar donation for renovation of the college's existing softball and soccer fields to create the
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Sports Complex. The Foundation contributed an additional $700,000 to the project to put the total gift at $6.7 million. The generous donation represents the largest financial contribution in the school's 103-year history, and the largest donation awarded by the Goodman Foundation.
The complex will be the home field for the Madison College men's and women's soccer and softball teams. It will also become a destination for community sporting activities, such as summer camps for disadvantaged youth, state-wide softball and soccer tournaments, and other events. Madison College's Athletic Department will also work closely with community centers on Madison's East Side to engage youth in sports and educational-enrichment activities.
