MILWAUKEE, WISC. - After suffering their second loss in the last three games earlier in the week, the Madison College women's basketball team was back to business Friday in defeating in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College, 78-66, at Alverno College. The WolfPack earned a regular season series sweep over the Stormers for the first time since the 2012-13 season, and now own 72-10 advantage all-time after picking up their fifth win in the last nine meetings following an 11-game win streak.
A closely played first quarter left Madison College (17-5, 8-2) down by three, a deficit that would grow to eight in the early minutes of the second quarter. An 8-0 run by the WolfPack tied the game at 32 on a
Rachel Slaney jumper, and after exchanging the lead the number of times of the next few minutes, the 'Pack closed the half on a 5-0 surge to grab a 41-36 advantage. That momentum carried through halftime as Madison College tallied a dozen straight points to catapult themselves into a double-digit lead they would never relinquish. The differential hovered between 11 and 18 points the rest of the game.
Sophomore
Rachel Slaney furthered her pursuit of the school's all-time points scored record with 26 points on 9-for-21 shooting overall and 2-of-5 from long range. The Barneveld, Wisconsin, native converted 6-of-8 free throws to reach 1,069 career points, leaving her six shy of tying Alicia Haag (Waunakee, WI/1988-90) at 1,075, while pushing her into third for points in a single season. Slaney also secured 13 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season, to go along with four assists, three steals, and a block.
Slaney double-double was nearly matched by freshman guard
Peyton Trapino's statline of 19 points and 13 rebounds, tying a career-high on the glass. It's the third double-double in the past five games for the former DeForest (WI) HS athlete. Trapino finished 8-for-12 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line.
Fellow first year
Macy Graf knocked down six of her 16 field goal attempts to score 13 points after being inserted into the starting lineup for the second time this season. The native of Jefferson, Wisconsin, made an impact defensively, as well, collecting a team-best four steals. Sophomore
Jamie Falk had nine points and a team-leading six assists.
The WolfPack shot 42-percent (32-76) overall, but finished under 30-percent from outside the arc for the fourth consecutive game. An 11-for-17 performance at the stripe pushed a streak of games under 70-percent free throw shooting to six straight. The visitors did finish with the advantage in points in the paint (48-36), second chance points (12-10), points off turnovers (20-12), rebounds (46-42), and turnovers (13-23). Milwaukee Area Technical College (13-10, 5-5) made just 4-of-22 tries from long range in the game.
Madison College plays game three of a four-game road trip at Wilbur Wright College (1-20, 1-9) on Wednesday. The WolfPack is 10-1 all-time against the Rams and have won seven straight, including an
85-28 decision in Madison last month. The lone win this season for WWC was a 2-0 forfeit against Harper College. Tip off is at 5:00 p.m. in Chicago, Illinois.
