MADISON, WISC. - Using maximum defensive pressure, the Madison College women's basketball team rolled to an 85-28 defeat of winless Wilbur Wright College at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium Saturday. A 23-0 game-opening run for the #3 WolfPack lead to a 37-4 first quarter lead that was never relinquished and extended the team's win streak to five. The 57-point victory, the largest since a 96-33 defeat of Kishwaukee College on January 2, also allowed the 'Pack to maintain a share of the North Central Community College lead with Rock Valley College, both owning 4-0 records.
Utilizing aggressive full court pressure, Madison College turned the Rams over ten times over the game's first four minutes, contributing 18 points to the early surge that didn't allow NJCAA Division II Wilbur Wright College (0-15, 0-4) to score until there were five minutes and 34 seconds left in the opening quarter. It was immediately followed by a 14-2 run as the WolfPack were an impressive 17-for-20 shooting the basketball in the first quarter after making 13 shots in a row to begin the game.
Â
The 'Pack eventually pulled back the full court defense, but continued to dominate at both ends of the floor, never allowing the Rams to score in double figures in any single quarter and forcing 24 turnovers. For the game, Madison College converted a season-best 61% of their shots, going 36-for-59 and making their lone three-point attempt. The one downside to the outstanding afternoon was a 12-of-21 effort at the free throw line. Of their 36 made field goals, 25 came off an assist, falling one helper shy of matching a season-high mark set November 9 against Fox Valley Technical College. WWC finished the game 11-for-42 (26%) overall, and lost for the seventh consecutive time in the head-to-head series.
Freshman
Megan Corcoran led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including that only make from long distance. It marks the third time this season the Madison, Wisconsin, native has paced the WolfPack attack and her 12th straight game with at least ten points. Corcoran also registered five assists.
Sophomore
Rachel Slaney packed the stat sheet yet again, en route to her eighth consecutive double-double, this time with 16 points and ten rebounds. The All-American and reigning
NJCAA Player of the Week made seven of her nine shot attempts and was 2-for-2 at the stripe. Slaney led the team with six assists.
All eight Madison College players that saw time were able to score, with three other reaching double digits. Sophomore
Jamie Falk notched a season-high 14 points - ten of which came in the first half - on 6-of-8 shooting. The Green Bay, Wisconsin, native had not reached double figures since scoring a dozen against Rochester CTC in late November, snapping a streak of ten straight performances with less than ten points.
Mariah Ginter also set a season-high mark for points with 13, her first double-digit effort this season. The 5'8" freshman forward went 5-for-6 overall and 3-for-9 at the free throw line, and also secured a career-best eight rebounds. And fellow first year
Peyton Trapino continued her string of strong scoring numbers with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
Madison College (15-3, 4-0) will put the finishing touches on a three-game homestand Wednesday against Harper College (2-12, 1-3). Since joining the N4C, the WolfPack have dominated the Hawks with 12 wins in 14 meetings, with ten of those wins coming consecutively prior to this week.
