LEADER OF THE PACK: Slaney is new all-time scoring leader

Record-setting moment, scoreless quarter part of 50-point win

CHICAGO, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball program has a new all-time leading scorer as Rachel Slaney now sits atop the list with 1,094 points. Slaney passed Alicia Haag's record of 1,075 points that stood for 27 years during Wednesday's lopsided 74-24 win over Wilbur Wright College. The 50-point margin of victory is the largest of the season, and the most since a 63-point win over UW-Rock County last season. The victory also keeps the #6 WolfPack sitting two games back of North Central Community College Conference leader Rock Valley College with three games remaining.

Entering the game and needing six points to tie Haag for the points record, Slaney missed her first two shots before history started to creep closer. The All-American converted her first basket less than two minutes into the game, then scored another on a layup one minute later. Sitting two points from history, Slaney waited more than four minutes to score again, knocking down a jumper with 2:49 to play. Just 45 seconds later she stepped to the free throw line with an uncontested attempt at standing alone in the record books. And like she had 336 times before, calmly splashed a free throw straight through the net for her record setting 1,076th point.

In fitting Slaney fashion, there was no ceremony or stoppage of play as she went right back to the line to make another free throw that put Madison College (18-5, 9-2) ahead 17-3. The game truly became one-sided in the second quarter when the WolfPack's stifling defense held Wilbur Wright College (1-21, 1-10) scoreless, forcing ten turnovers and seven missed shots. It marked the first time all season the 'Pack did not allow a single point over a ten-minute quarter. At the other end, Lois Heeren's club sank 8 of 16 shots and went 5-for-5 at the free throw line for a 21-point quarter to assume a 38-5 lead at the half. Easing off the gas in the second half, Madison College doubled up the Rams in the third quarter 24-12 and won the fourth by a 12-7 tally.

The WolfPack shot 43-percent (28-64) overall with two 3-pointers, while going 16-for-22 from the stripe. WWC converted at a 22-percent clip with just 11 total made field goal attempts. The rest of the team categories all heavily favored the WolfPack: points in the paint (42-8), points off turnovers (26-2), second chance points (11-2), bench points (13-3), rebounds (55-25), offensive rebounds (23-9), and turnovers (16-25) en route to their 11th win in 12 all-time meetings against the Rams.

Slaney finished with a game-high 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting, making both of her three-point attempts and 7-of-11 tries at the free throw line. The former Barneveld Eagles standout registered her fifth straight double-double and 17th of the year with ten rebounds. She also had five assists, a team-best five steals, and one block.

Freshman Mariah Ginter tallied her second career double-digit scoring game with 11 points off the bench. A native a Livingston, Wisconsin, Ginter made 4-of-7 shot from the field and hit 3-of-4 free throws, while also gathering six rebounds. Fellow first year Peyton Trapino continued her recent string of outstanding performances with her fourth double-double in six games, going for ten points and ten boards. She also dished out a team-leading seven assists. Sophomore Jamie Falk led the WolfPack rebounding effort with 11 and added eight points.

Madison College will not play again until Wednesday, February 15 against College of Dupage (10-10, 7-3) at Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack will earn a conference win, but not an overall season victory, due to the cancellation of Saturday's game at Harper College. The Hawks called off their season due to injuries creating a lack of available players. As for the matchup with the Chaparrals, Madison College has won seven straight in the head-to-head series, including a 76-48 road win last month, and own a 19-13 advantage in a series that dates back to 1987. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. for a game that will feature the Play4Kay campaign for breast cancer awareness and research, as well as recognize some of Madison College's top faculty.

The game will be broadcast live on MadisonCollege.TV and via the Madison College Athletics Facebook page.
