Shake-up of lineup produces 27-point win for #6 WolfPack

Three score in double-figures in penultimate home game

MADISON, WISC. - First year head coach Lois Heeren shook-up the Madison College women's basketball team's starting lineup Wednesday against the College of DuPage, and it resulted in a 78-51 victory at Redsten Gymnasium. The #6 WolfPack, winners of three straight heading into their regular season finale, own an eight game win streak over the Chaparrals as they swept the regular season series for the four consecutive year.

Madison College (20-5, 11-2) built a 14-point lead in the first quarter thanks to an offense that made ten of its first 17 shots and a defense that limited DuPage (11-12, 8-5) just four successful field goal attempts out of 15. That defense also produced seven first quarter turnovers. The second quarter played much more competitively, however, a short 7-0 run midway through boosted the WolfPack lead to 36-16, a differential that remained at the end of the half. The lead dropped to as little at 16 early in the third quarter at 48-32, and was answered by a 30-19 finishing kick to close out the 20th win in 33 all-time meeting with the Chaparrals.

For the 21st time this season, sophomore Rachel Slaney led the 'Pack with a double-double of 27 points and 15 rebounds, marking her sixth straight and 18th double-double overall. Honored prior to tip off for setting a new program record for scoring, the All-American responded with a 10-for-18 shooting performance that was bolstered by a 6-of-7 effort at the free throw line. Slaney also had five assists, three steals, and a team-best three blocks.

Rachel Slaney is presented a game ball by Director of Athletics Steve Hauser and head coach Lois Heeren after setting a new school scoring record.

Freshman guard Peyton Trapino was nearly perfect from the floor as she made 9-of-11 shots en route to 19 points, extending her streak of double-digit scoring games to 12 consecutive. The DeForest, Wisconsin, native also had a team-high six assists and six steals, matching a career-high for the latter. Fellow first-year Megan Corcoran tallied 15 points with two of her six made baskets coming from outside the arc. It was her best scoring game of the month of February.

Freshman Mariah Ginter and Shakira Burks each recorded their first career starts. Burks, who goes by name KJ, scored two points on 1-of-2 shooting and dished out one assist in 17 minutes. Ginter missed both of her shot attempts and a pair of free throws, but managed to secure three rebounds and passed for two assists in her 17 minutes on the floor.

The WolfPack finished 33-for-70 (47%) overall for their fifth consecutive game shooting over 40-percent and capitalized on nine of their 15 tries at the free throw line. They scored 29 points off 26 Chaparrals turnovers, owned a 27-4 advantage in bench points, and dominated the interior with a 50-24 differential in points in the paint - aided by 16 second chance points. The 'Pack did commit 23 turnovers, its most in a game since 24 against Joliet Junior College on January 7.

Madison College will finish second in the North Central Community College Conference for a second year in a row after Rock Valley College defeated Triton College 79-49 to claim their seventh straight league crown. The top-ranked Golden Eagles (25-3, 13-0) will bring a 16-game win streak to H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium on Saturday for the regular season finale. The WolfPack lost in Illinois by a 63-57 final earlier this year, but will be playing for the third consecutive season split with their I-90 rivals. Madison owns a narrow 18-17 advantage all-time and has won three of the last five meetings after not earning single win from 2011-2015, a span of 11 games. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.

Saturday will be Sophomore Day, as the WolfPack say goodbye to two players in their final home games, and the 11th Annual Jam the Gym celebration and alumni weekend. The festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The game will be broadcast live on MadisonCollege.TV and via the Madison College Athletics Facebook page.
