MILWAUKEE, WISC. - A 23-8 scoring run to end the first half propelled the Madison College men's basketball team to a 90-77 road win over in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College on Friday at Alverno College, ending a two-game losing streak. The win gave the WolfPack their first regular season sweep of the Stormers since 2008-09 and is the fourth win in the last six games of the I-94 series.
Madison College (15-9, 7-3) led for nearly the entire game after Milwaukee Area Technical College (12-13, 4-6) scored the game's first basket. After extending their advantage to as much as six points, the WolfPack again lost the lead when the Stormers rattled off seven consecutive points to assume a 24-23 edge with 6:14 to play in the half. That's when the 'Pack found their groove and outscored their rivals by 15 points to take a 46-32 lead into the locker room. The run included six points from Waldon and
Stavon Staples, who buried a pair of three-pointers. The second half played extremely competitive and Milwaukee Tech cut the lead to five at 58-53 within the first eight minutes, but after three quick Madison College baskets the differential was back above ten, where it would remain for the rest of the contest.
Sophomore
Shane Waldon became the seventh player in program history to score at least 33 points, setting a new career-high for the UW-Whitewater transfer. He connected on 12-of-18 attempts and was 9-for-11 at the free throw line en route to his first 30-point game and his eighth 20-point game of the season. Waldon, a native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, also grabbed a team-best ten rebounds for his fifth double-double and his first in five games. Not done there, Waldon also had a career-high four blocks in his 36-plus minutes of action.
Freshman
Tyree Young made six field goals and six free throws to account for his 18 points, while also handing out six assists. It's the second double-digit scoring effort for the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native in the last four games. Guard Paul Schmelzer III drained three 3-pointers for the third time in four games after not reaching that mark for an eight-game stretch. The former Monona Grove (WI) HS athlete tallied 14 points, while
Stavon Staples had ten points and a team-high three steals.
After a two-game drop off the WolfPack's shooting touch returned to its prior percentages, including 52-percent (31-59) overall. The 'Pack made eight 3-pointers, three of which came from
Jezzriah Burton, to shot 47-percent from beyond the arc for the first time in 13 games. They were also an impressive 20-of-23 at the free throw stripe. When they weren't knocking down long range shots, Madison College owned a 42-26 advantage in points in the paint as they took a 53-45 lead in the head-to-head series with Milwaukee.
Madison College remains on the road for two more games this week, starting Wednesday at Wilbur Wright College (2-24, 2-8). The Rams have dropped six straight games and have gone 1-7 since losing
82-65 to the WolfPack last month. The all-time series belongs to Madison College by a 12-3 margin since the 2009-10 season. The 'Pack has won the last five get togethers. Game time in Chicago, Illinois, is set for 7:00 p.m.
