Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Waldon's career-high 27 keys fourth-straight WolfPack win

Madison College off to best start ever in N4C

MADISON, WISC. - A season-high win streak now sits at four games after the Madison College men's basketball team took care of Wilbur Wright College by an 82-65 margin Saturday at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack used a 15-6 scoring run at the end of the first half to seize control of the game and propel themselves to the program's best start (3-1) since joining the North Central Community College Conference in 2009-10.

The game's first ten minutes saw three ties and five lead changes before forward Shane Waldon's layup with 9:50 to play in the half broke an 18-all tie and triggered a quick 8-0 run. It gave the WolfPack the lead for good, which stood at 43-30 at the break. More than half of the Madison College points (24) came as a result of 13 first half turnovers committed by the Rams. The home team also took advantage of the familiar shooting environment, knocking down 18-of-24 attempts for a stellar 75% mark in the first 20 minutes.

Despite three quick points by NJCAA Division II Wilbur Wright College (1-17, 1-3), the visitors were never able to cut the deficit to single digits. Instead, the 'Pack slowly climbed to a 21-point advantage at 60-39 with 11:36 remaining. Part of that ascent was a monstrous two-hand power dunk by Waldon off a feed from freshman Tyree Young as the WolfPack got the transition game up-and-running. That easy slam also contributed to a 50-24 advantage in points in the paint.

Madison College finished the game shooting 57% with 30 makes on 52 overall attempts. The WolfPack took full advantage of a parade of players reaching the free throw line and converting 20-of-25 (80%) tries. WWC also found their way to the line, going 22-for-33 (66%) as the two squads combined to commit 46 personal fouls.

Waldon, a 6'7" sophomore transfer from UW-Whitewater, set a new career-high for scoring for the second time in four games with 27 points. The former Sun Prairie (WI) HS athlete was 11-for-14 from the field and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. Waldon's point total was one better than his final tally ten days prior against #5 Triton College, the lone team to beat the WolfPack in N4C play this season. He also led the team with seven rebounds, part of a 34-22 edge on the glass for Madison College.

Tyree Young continued his recent scoring surge with a sixth-straight double-digit point total, pouring in 13 points due to a perfect 7-for-7 day at the line. The 5'11" guard has reached the ten-point mark in 11 the last 13 games. Young also dished out five assists.

Fellow freshman Stavon Staples contributed 12 points to the cause, doing so in just his fourth game as a starter. And sophomore Joel O'Donnell tallied ten points on 4-of-6 shooting with a pair of free throws. Both Staples and O'Donnell grabbed five rebounds. Paul Schmelzer III was the top assist man with seven. Nine of the ten WolfPack players who saw the floor were able to score as Madison College defeated the Rams for the fifth straight time, and 12th in 15 meetings.

The WolfPack will complete a three-game homestand on Wednesday when conference foe Harper College (6-14, 1-3) invades Madison. The two programs have evenly split their 18 prior meetings, including a 7-7 mark as N4C opponents. The Hawks won the last meeting, snapping a three-game Madison College win streak. In a weird twist, the all-time series has favored the road team, with the host falling in 11 of 15 true home games. Tip off from Redsten Gymnasium is at 7:30 p.m.

It will also be Little Badgers Night, as the renowned dribbling troupe will entertain fans at halftime of the men's contest.

The game will be broadcast live on MadisonCollege.TV or via the Madison College Athletics Facebook page.
