CHICAGO, ILL. - In a matter of seven minutes Wednesday night, the Madison College men's basketball team had a double-digit road lead and was well on its way to a 70-46 thrashing of Wilbur Wright College. The win marks the sixth straight over the Rams and keeps the WolfPack tied for second in the North Central Community College Conference, an accomplishment that would mark the best in program history.
Sophomore
Shane Waldon scored five straight points to open the game, propelling Madison College (16-9, 8-3) to a 10-0 run in the game's first six minutes and 43 seconds. The lead narrowed to as close as eight at 18-10 with 5:09 remaining in the half, then swelled to as big as 16 less than three minutes later when freshman
Deshawn Black made it 28-12 with layup. The second half began with the WolfPack up a dozen and Wilbur Wright College (2-25, 2-9) trying to keep the game within reach, but an 8-0 surge in just over a minutes time quickly pushed the differential to 19 at 44-25 with less than 12 minutes to play. Madison College outscored the Rams 26-21 the rest of the way out to secure their 13th win in 16 all-time meetings between the two programs.
The WolfPack, who were still receiving votes in the latest
NJCAA Division III Poll, dominated in every facet of the game, owning sizable advantages in points in the paint (38-8), points off turnovers (16-2), rebounds (38-26), and turnovers (24-13). Madison College hit better than half of its shots for the second game in a row, knocking down 30 of 57 (52%), though struggled from long range with just one 3-pointer on nine tries. Wilbur Wright shot 25-percent (11-44) overall with three triples, and stayed in the game thanks to a 21-for-24 effort at the free throw line.
Off the bench,
Deshawn Black matched a career-high with 15 points as he connected on 7 of 9 shots from the floor to lead the WolfPack offensively. It's just the third double-digit scoring game of the season for the Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native, and the first in nine games. Fellow Sun Prairie product
Shane Waldon had 13 points as the only other player in double-figures. The duo also matched each other for the team lead in rebounds with seven a piece.
Eight other players contributed to the WolfPack scoring tally, as
Paul Schmelzer III,
Tyree Young, and
Joel O'Donnell each added seven points. Schmelzer, Young, and
Zach Adkins all tied for team honors with three assists.
Madison College will put the finishing touches on a four-game road trip - and a stretch of six road games in the last seven played - when they travel to Harper College (7-20, 2-9) on Saturday. The WolfPack defeated the Hawks
95-78Â last month to assume a 10-9 advantage in the all-time series, winning four of the last five gatherings. Tip off in Palatine, Illinois, is at 3:00 p.m.
