MADISON, WISC - The Madison College men's basketball had to sweat things out Wednesday night at Redsten Gymnasium, downing visiting Harper College by a 95-78 final to win their fifth straight game. Already off to their best start ever in North Central Community College Conference competition, the WolfPack recovered from a furious second half rally by the Hawks and can now claim the program's first ever four-game win streak in N4C play. The win also broke a 9-9 tie the all-time series.
The home team jumped out early to a 7-0 lead thanks to back-to-back buckets from
Shane Waldon and a
Tyree Young three-pointer. Ten minutes later it was
Jeffrey Marcum, Young, and
Paul Schmelzer III combining for an 11-0 burst to assume a 38-21 advantage with less than seven minutes remaining in the half. The advantage would grow to as much as 21 in the final minute before the WolfPack took a 55-36 lead into the break.
An absolutely wild second half saw Harper College (6-15, 1-4) turn a 19-point deficit into a one-point lead by scoring 20 straight points over a five minute span. Madison College, however, had some fight left in them and made sure the 67-66 Hawks lead would be their only lead of the night. The 'Pack stormed back, using runs of 8-0 and 9-0 to outscore the competition 29-11 over the game's final ten minutes and seven seconds.
For the second game in a row and third time in the last four outings, Madison College shot better than 50%, knocking down 37-of-71 (52%) field goal attempts and 6-of-17 shots from three-point range. The WolfPack also converted 15-of-18 free throws, while controlling the lane with a 58-34 edge in points in the paint.
Shane Waldon and
Tyree Young each registered a double-double in the win, marking the fourth this season for Waldon and the first career for Young. Waldon was nearly perfect from the field as he tallied 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting and a 6-for-6 effort at the free throw line. The sophomore had 11 rebounds and two blocks in just 23 minutes of game time. As for Waldon, his 16 points were accompanied by a career-best 11 rebounds, helping the WolfPack to a 49-38 advantage on the glass. The freshman made his only two shots from beyond the arc and dished out four assists.
Stavon Staples and
Paul Schmelzer III also scored in double figures with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Schmelzer led the WolfPack with six assists, while Staples nabbed a team-high three steals. Freshman
Jeffrey Marcum set career highs with nine points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench. The Highland, Utah, native also connected on his first career three-pointer.
Madison College will hit the road for their next two games, starting Saturday at College of DuPage (1-16, 1-4). The Chaparrals have lost three straight since picking up their lone win against Wilbur Wright College. They also own a 10-7 advantage in the head-to-head series, however, it is even at seven wins a piece through 14 regular season conference matchups. DuPage took two of three from the WolfPack last year, including a two-point win in the NJCAA Region IV quarterfinals, and have won seven of the last nine meetings. Tip off in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is at 3:00 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on
