Cold shooting, turnovers plague WolfPack in road loss

Worst shooting performance of season results in loss to Joliet

JOLIET, ILL. - In pursuit of their first ever season sweep of Joliet Junior College, the Madison College men's basketball team picked an inopportune time to have their worst shooting night of the season, which contributed to a lopsided 67-38 road loss Wednesday. The setback also drops the WolfPack into a tie for second in the North Central Community College Conference standings and a full three games back of Triton College with just five games remaining.

The two teams combined to hit their first there shot attempts before massive shooting woes took over. Madison College (14-9, 6-3) made just two of its next 13 shots - Joliet converted four of their next 13 - and let a narrow 6-2 lead turn into a 10-8 deficit from which they couldn't fully return. The WolfPack did manage to pull even at 18 with 4:07 remaining in the half, but were outscored 13-2 going into the locker room.  As the 'Pack tried to rally from a double-digit hole, the second half shooting proved to be even more frigid. Joliet (18-7, 4-5) scored the first ten points to stretch the lead to 21 before a Stavon Staple basket ended the drought, but it would be just one of six made shots in the final 20 minutes.

The WolfPack finished the game 14-for-42, setting season-low marks for field goals made, field goals attempted, and field goal percentage (33%). It was just the third time this season Madison College has failed to shoot at least 40-percent. From beyond the arc the WolfPack missed on 17-of-19 attempts. The Wolves hit 7-of-21 tries en route to their 21st win in 26 all-time meetings, which includes a dozen straight wins in games played south of the Illinois-Wisconsin border.

To make matters worse, the 'Pack committed 18 turnovers - nine in each half - that led to 14 Wolves points. By comparison, the home team turned it over nine times with the visitors cashing in for only two points. JJC also held a 26-10 advantage in points in the paint and received a huge boost from its bench, which outscored the WolfPack's bench by 20.

All ten players that saw game action for Madison College were able to contribute to the score, however, sophomore Shane Waldon was the lone player to reach double-digits. The UW-Whitewater transfer went 3-for-6 overall and 4-for-4 at the free throw line to tally ten points. Waldon also paced the WolfPack with seven rebounds.

Stavon Staples had eight points off the bench and Paul Schmelzer III had six points. Tyree Young led the team in assists with five.

Madison College will have a shorter than normal turnaround as their road trip continues Friday at in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College (11-13, 4-5). The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved up a day following tragic death of freshman guard D'Andre Morehouse. Friday's game will mark the 98th all-time meeting in a series that dates back to 1977. Madison College currently holds the upper hand by a 52-45 margin having won three of the last five contests, including a 78-57 victory on January 11. The WolfPack have not swept the season series with the Stormers since 2008-09. Tip off on the Alverno College campus is at 8:00 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on MadisonCollege.TV and via the Madison College Athletics Facebook page.
