Box Score 3 Madison College Baseball cruised to their sixth consecutive NJCAA Region IV sectional championship this weekend with three wins over two days. The WolfPack beat College of Lake County twice and Prairie State College once to earn the right to advance to the NJCAA Region IV Baseball Tournament held Friday-Sunday, May 15-17, at Boomers Stadium, in Schaumburg, IL.
Game 1 - Madison College 5, College of Lake County 0Â (9 innings)On Saturday, in game one of the sectional tournament, the WolfPack offense got off to a fast start in support of freshman righthander,
Derek Heffel. In the first inning, Madison College used an RBI single by
Travis Hamilton and a two RBI single by
Luke Yapp to take an early 3-0 lead. The WolfPack offense would put two more runs on the board in the seventh and eighth inning but the game was already in hand thanks to a pitching gem provided by former Racine St. Catherine High School's,
Derek Heffel. Heffel struck out fourteen batters on his way to a complete game nine-inning shutout, improving his season mark to a flawless 8-0.
Brandon Gibis and
Sam Hurt each went 3-for-4. Gibis also had an RBI, a double and homerun.
Travis Hamilton and
Mike Jordahl each had an RBI while second year teammate
Luke Yapp posted two RBI on his first inning single.
Game 2 - Madison College 13, Prairie State College 1Â (5 innings)In the second game on Saturday, the WolfPack made quick order of the visiting Prairie State College Pioneers behind nine runs on seven hits in the fourth inning. The run-rule was in effect as Madison College led by more than 10 runs after five innings, winning 13-1.
Brandon Gibis and
Sam Hurt once again led the team offensively by posting three hits each. Hurt was 3-for-4 with a double and game high four RBI while Gibis was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Tony Butler and
Courtney Watkins each had two hits while
Nick Kanavas and
Trevor Tunison also added hits of their own for a team total of twelve hits. In addition to Gibis and Hurt,
Tony Butler,
Travis Hamilton,
Luke Yapp,
Mike Jordahl, Courtney Walkins and
Trevor Tunison all had RBI in the convincing win.
Marcellus Sneed pitched a five inning complete game, striking out three and walking two. Sneed gave up just two hits and no earned runs in his five innings of work.
Game 3 - Madison College 11, College of Lake County 2 (9 innings)On Sunday, in the tournament final, the WolfPack played College of Lake County for the second time in two days. The WolfPack offense once again came alive early in the game as they scored three runs in both the first and second innings to open up a 6-0 lead. Madison College added a pair of runs in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. WolfPack pitchers held the Lancers at bay scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs in the 11-2 victory.
Brandon Gibis continued his blazing batting as he went 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.
Sam Hurt,
Travis Hamilton,
Mike Jordahl and
Matt Cole all had two hits as the WolfPack combined for a total of 15 hits.
Travis Hamilton had a game high two RBI on 2-for-4 batting.
Sam Hurt continued his tremendous tournament as well belting two hits and posting two RBI in five at-bats.
Westin Wuethrich earned his fifth win of the season by pitching six innings, striking out six, walking one, scattering six hits and giving up one earned run.
Clayton Uselman came in in relief and pitched two innings of one hit baseball while second year teammate,
Ryne Blanton, pitched one inning of hitless baseball to finish the game.
With the win, the WolfPack advance to the NJCAA Region IV Tournament hosted at Boomer Stadium in Schaumburg, IL on Friday-Sunday, May 15-17. Madison College plays Morton College on Friday, May 15 at noon. The winner of the region tournament advances to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, OK, from May 23-30. The WolfPack have made five consecutive world series appearances.
