The last time Evan Wartgow swung a club for the Madison College golf team he was finishing second overall at the NJCAA Division III Golf Championship. Now, not surprisingly, the former All-American is a Wisconsin PGA player who also serves as the Assistant Golf Professional at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club, located in his hometown of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin.
Recently, at the end of June, Wartgow won the Yamaha Golf & Utility/Bushnell Classic by shooting a five-under 67. The victory was his first in an 18-hole WPGA classic.
"It was a great feeling," Wartgow said. "I played well last year and was just finishing in the top five most of the time, but to finally break through and play that well on a course that I'd never played before was awesome. That really has helped me."
Now, the former WolfPack standout is hoping to parlay that success into bigger and better things down the road.
"Some of my goals include qualifying for a PGA Tour event and winning a Wisconsin State Open title," he said.
To accomplish either, Evan knows he must maintain a short memory. "No matter what happened on the last hole, you have to blank it out of your head and focus on what is in front of you. It's a marathon, not a sprint."
The ultimate finish line for the Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, native may be different from what most would expect though. In a perfect world, Wartgow would like to take the "assistant" out of Assistant Golf Professional.
"I'm trying to become a Class-A PGA professional that runs a golf facility," says Wartgow. "However, if I get the chance to play professionally, I will definitely take that opportunity."
If practice truly does make perfect, expect to hear the name Evan Wartgow a lot more in the future. "When I'm done with work, I try to fit in some golf and practice whenever I can, usually playing nine holes or more," said Wartgow. "I really only get one day off a week, and that is usually taken up by a tournament or just golf in general."
As they say, there's no rest for the weary.
