WolfPack splits final conference doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Madison College baseball team wrapped up its regular season conference slate Saturday. Hosting Harper College, the WolfPack split their doubleheader with the Hawks, winning 5-1 before falling 4-2. The loss proved to be the lone blemish during conference competition for the 'Pack.

Game one, things started out very slow. The only run scored in the first three and a half innings came in the first, when Dan Schmidt flied out to center to score Danny Krause.

The WolfPack would add two more runs in the fourth. First, Courtney Watkins singled to left to bring in Luke Yapp. Next, an error allowed Watkins to score, making it 3-0 Madison College after four innings of play.

Keith Browning expanded the WolfPack lead in the fifth. His single to right would plate Brandon Gibis, pushing the Madison College lead to 4-0.

The only run scored by Harper College came in the top of the sixth. A fielder's choice would allow Tyler Crussen to touch home, cutting the Madison lead to 4-1.

Krause provided the final RBI for the WolfPack in the bottom of the sixth. His single to left scored Luke Syens, resulting in the final score of 5-1.

Corey Fischer (6-1) picked up his sixth win in seven starts for Madison College. Fischer threw all seven innings, striking out five, while allowing just five hits and the one earned run.

Game two, neither team would score until the fourth inning. However, it was there that the Hawks would start hitting WolfPack starter Marcellus Sneed hard. Harper College scored four runs in the inning.

Madison College would try to rally in the bottom of the fifth. A Brandon Gibis single to center scored both Sam Hurt and Matt Cole, but it was the only offense the WolfPack would be able to muster up all game.

Sneed (5-2) took the loss for Madison College. In five and two-thirds innings pitched, he struck out four, giving up nine hits and four earned runs.

The WolfPack (34-14, 11-1) will conclude their regular season tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against South Suburban College. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
