Box Score Madison College Baseball's first loss of the World Series may have also been their toughest loss of the year. Trailing Hinds Community College (Miss.) 6-0 after one inning of play at the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla., the WolfPack rallied back, only to fall 8-7 after thirteen innings of play.
The Eagles got to Madison College starter
Dan Schmidt early, as Marshall Boggs and Jonathan Washam hit a pair of homers, resulting in five of the six runs Hinds would score in the first frame. However, after that Schmidt would settle in, shutting out the Eagles over the next five and two-thirds innings.
Meanwhile, the WolfPack would slowly chip away at the large deficit. Madison College scored their first two runs in the top of the third, coming on a
Brandon Gibis sac fly and later a passed ball.
Down 6-2 heading into the fourth, the 'Pack would plate two more runs on one swing of the bat. Following a
Dylan Detert walk to lead off the inning,
Luke Yapp launched a two-run home run to left.
Later, Yapp would come through for Madison College once again, this time in the sixth inning. His single to center scored Schmidt, cutting the Hinds Community College lead to 6-5.
Still behind 6-5 in the seventh inning,
Keith Browning stole home, as Schmidt was tossed out trying to take second. The end result was Madison College evening the score at 6-6.
Shortly after, Yapp would give the 'Pack their first lead of the game, hitting a single to left to plate Detert. Up 7-6, Madison College would protect their one-run advantage until the ninth inning.
Throwing in relief,
Marcellus Sneed would hit two Eagles batters in the bottom of the ninth, setting up a Marshall Boggs single which brought in Brian Mills to tie the game at 7-7. Fortunately, Browning came up large on the same play, saving the game for the WolfPack when his throw from center field beat Quade Smith to the plate. Smith was trying to score the game-winning run for Hinds Community College, but instead his out forced extra innings.
Madison College had a chance to regain the lead in the tenth inning but Schmidt grounded out to third with the bases loaded.
Still tied 7-7 in the twelveth inning,
Courtney Watkins had a chance to put the 'Pack up. Unfortunately, he too would ground out with the bases loaded.
The game stayed 7-7 until the thirteenth inning when Toler Robinson doubled off
Nathan Hoffmann to score Luke Reynolds for the victory.
With the first WolfPack World Series loss, Madison College will face Pasco-Hernando State College (Fla.) in a semifinal elimination game on Thursday, May 29 at 3:30 p.m.
