Box Score There was no stopping the Madison College baseball team in Schaumburg, Ill this weekend as they stormed through the tournament outscoring opponents, 25-8, over three games. Thanks to an 11-4 win over Kankakee Community College in Sunday's NJCAA Region IV championship game, the WolfPack will play in their fifth straight NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla.
Versus the Cavaliers, the 'Pack would put up a combined five runs in the first two innings. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the second, the 'Pack would take their first lead of the game and never look back.
Danny Krause's single toward second scored
Sam Hurt, putting Madison College up 3-2.
Courtney Watkins would then score on a fielder's choice, followed immediately by a
Keith Browning triple to center to bring in Krause. Following two innings of play, the WolfPack would lead it 5-2.
Kankakee Community College would cut the Madison College lead to 5-4, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, but that's as close as they'd come for the rest of the game.
The WolfPack added a single run in both the fourth and fifth inning to push their lead back up to three. The team would then go off for four more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
After a Watkins single to center plated Hurt, Browning would double to right with the bases loaded to score three more runs. Browning finished with a game-high four RBI.
Mike Jordahl and
Luke Yapp each added two RBI.
Dan Schmidt was credited with the win for the WolfPack. Schmidt threw seven innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs.
Head coach
Mike Davenport earned Region IV Coach-of-the-Year honors and second year outfielder
Keith Browning was named the tournament's most valuable player. Browning was 5-for-9 with six RBIs in both games versus Kankakee Community College.
Up next, Madison College will play Westchester Community College (NY) at 9:00 AM on Saturday, March 24th in the 2014 NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla. The double-elimination tournament runs from Saturday, May 24 to Saturday, May 31. The WolfPack have finished third overall twice in the last three seasons.
