WolfPack win down in Schaumburg again

Box Score It's looking good for the top-seeded Madison College baseball team, as the WolfPack seeks a fifth straight NJCAA Division II World Series berth. Currently down in Schaumburg, Ill. for the NJCAA Region IV Regional Tournament, the 'Pack picked up their second win in as many days, beating second-seeded Kankakee Community College 12-4.

The Cavaliers struck first, scoring two runs off of Rex Morrow in the top of the fourth, as Eric Phillis homered to right field. Kankakee would hold that 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth, when Madison College turned things up a notch. There, the WolfPack would score five runs to take the 5-2 lead.

Sam Hurt and Danny Krause led off the fifth inning with back-to-back doubles, each one scoring a run to tie the game at two. The very next batter, Brandon Gibis, singled to center to bring in Krause. Finally, Matt Cole singled to center to plate a pair and the WolfPack would never look back from that point forward.

Still leading 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Madison College would add four more runs. Gibis and Keith Browning would hit back-to-back singles to left which resulted in two runs. Later, Dan Schmidt tripled to right, allowing Gibis and Browning to both cross the dish.

Kankakee responded with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh, cutting the Madison College lead to 9-4, but it would prove to be all for naught. Clearly on a roll, the 'Pack put up three additional runs in the bottom of the inning, securing the 12-4 mercy.

Gibis capped off his four RBI day with another single to right to score Luke Syens and Joe Stubbe. Then, Browning finished off the Cavaliers with a sac fly which scored Hurt.

Madison College finished the game with 14 hits, compared to Kankakee's nine.

Rex Morrow picked up the victory for the WolfPack. Morrow threw six and one-third innings, struck out nine and gave up four earned runs.

With the win, the WolfPack advance to tomorrow's Region IV championship game at 3:30 p.m. Seeing as the tournament is a double-elimination format, Madison College would have to be beaten in back-to-back games to be eliminated.
