Box Score Try though they might, the Madison College baseball team could not sweep through their sectional tournament, falling 4-2 at the hands of Illinois Valley Community College in Sunday's first championship game. The WolfPack could never quite figure out pitcher Teke Scudder in the loss.
In the first inning, Madison College pitcher
Rex Morrow struggled. Morrow gave up two runs, following a bases loaded walk and wild pitch.
Offensively, the WolfPack would not get on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning. Still trailing 2-0,
Dan Schmidt scored from third as
Dylan Detert was thrown out trying to steal second.
With their lead at just one run, Illinois Valley Community College added a pair in the top of the eighth. The result was a 4-1 Eagles lead entering the bottom of the eighth.
Still back 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Madison College tried to rally back. However, the team could only muster up a single run, as
Sam Hurt singled to short to score Detert.
Rex Morrow (5-3) took the loss for the WolfPack. Morrow threw five innings, walked six and struck out six, while giving up just two hits and two earned runs.
The loss forces a second championship game between the two teams. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m., with the winner advancing to the NJCAA Region IV Regional Tournament.
