Loss at Pima closes spring trip for #10 Madison College

WolfPack posted 8-3 record in Arizona

TUCSON, ARIZ. - The final game of the annual Arizona Spring Trip resulted in a 10-5 loss at Pima Community College for the Madison College baseball team. The WolfPack went 8-3 on the trip, which included a seven-game win streak. The Aztecs have dominated the all-time series, winning ten of the 11 games played and settling for a tie in the other.

Neither team was able to generate a run for the game's first four-and-a-half innings until Pima Community College (19-16) blasted through with a seven-run bottom of the fifth. The Aztecs opened the inning with a triple, which was followed by seven more base hits and on hit by pitch.

The WolfPack got two runs back in the top of the sixth. With two runners on and two outs, freshman Ian Salvesen hit a pop fly that resulted in an error and allowed JJ Wolbert to score. After a walk loaded the bases, designated hitter Casey Wambach was hit by a pitch to force in Sam Moses

Pima tacked on another run in their half of the sixth on a sacrifice fly; however, Madison College answered with a three-run seventh. Jonah Roloff, a first year centerfielder, opened the inning with a double and was joined on the bases by Quinn Falish and Wolbert after back-to-back walks. An error on a grounder by Nate Novinska allowed Roloff to score before Salvesen singled in Falish and another Aztecs error on a Wambach ground ball brought in Wolbert to make it 8-5.

A two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth off freshman righthander Jack Poellot extended the differential to five runs before the Pack hit into a game-ending double play with two runners on in the ninth.

Wolbert, a sophomore from Wales, Wisconsin, went 2 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored. He has produced multiple hits in four of his last six games played.

Roloff had a hit and scored a run, while Salvesen posted one hit, one walk, and one run batted in.

Madison College used four different arms in the game. Starter Tavian Shramek tossed two-plus innings of shutout baseball with three hits allowed and two strikeouts. Freshman Aaron Ploszay (1-1) suffered his first collegiate loss after giving up five runs on four hits in less than two innings of work. Mason Sherman took over for an inning and was tagged for three runs on five hits before Poellot worked the final three innings. He struck out a career-high six batters, while also giving up allowing six hits and a walk, resulting in two runs.
