Pitcher's duel goes to #7 WolfPack in DH split at Bryant & Stratton

Madison College posts first shutout win and first Region 4 loss

OCONOMOWOC, WISC. - Monday's doubleheader between in-state rivals Madison College and Bryant & Stratton College resulted in a pair of first, with the WolfPack securing their first shutout victory of the season before taking their first loss in Region 4 play. The Pack, which earlier in the day moved up to #7 in the NJCAA Division II Poll, followed pitchers Broden Jackson and Axel Donaldson to a 3-0 win in the opener and then dropped a 10-6 contest to snap a five-game win streak against region foes. The split puts the all-time series with the Bobcats at 14-5 in favor of Madison College.

Game #1: #7 Madison College 3, Bryant & Stratton College 0

Neither team sent more than four batters to the plate until the top of the fourth inning, when Madison College rallied with two outs to score the game's only three runs. Following two strikeouts, first baseman Ian Salvesen single up the middle and shortstop Beau Bloxdorf drew a walk. Freshman third baseman Eason Hurd stepped up and drove a double to right field wall to score Salvesen. Designated hitter Paul Nuetzel then grounded a ball to shorstop, which resulted in an error that allowed both Bloxdorf and Hurd to score.

The WolfPack had a chance to add some insurance runs in the seventh; however, sophomore Sam Moses was called out on strikes with the bases loaded.

Bryant & Stratton College was limited to three hits and two walks during the game. Broden Jackson, a former Milton HS athlete, faced 21 batters over six scoreless innings, struck out seven batters, and walked one. He has now recorded at least six K's in all five of his appearances this season. Axel Donaldson secured his first save of the season by working the seventh inning, and recording one strikeout and one walk.

Madison College registered just three hits, but also took advantage of six walks. Hurd, a transfer from NCAA Divison I Creighton University, finished 1 for 3 with a run batted in and a run scored. Salvesen had a hit and a run scored. JJ Wolbert posted the other hit for the WolfPack to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

Game #2: Bryant & Stratton College 10, #7 Madison College 6

In the day's second game, Madison College was unable to generate runs early as they left two runners on in the first, three in the second, and two in the third before Bryant & Stratton College (14-10-1) got on the scoreboard. The Bobcats took a 5-0 lead in the third, which included a two-run home run and a two-run double as part of a five consecutive hits against starter Landon Dessart.

The WolfPack put up their first run in the fourth as second baseman JJ Wolbert drove in freshman Jonah Roloff with a ground out to second after Roloff led off the inning with a double.

Bryant & Stratton responded with three more runs in their half of the fourth, following a run-scoring double with their second two-run homer of the game. With plenty of game left to play, the WolfPack battled right back to close within 8-6 with a five-run fifth inning. Facing a new pitcher, the Pack loaded the bases with a double, a walk, and a single before sophomore shortstop Beau Bloxdorf lined a double to right to bring in Nate Novinska and Sam Moses. After another pitching change, Roloff blasted his first career home run with a three-run shot to right.

The Bobcats added another run in the fifth with a solo home run to regain some momentum, and then went 1-2-3 through the Madison College bats in the final two innings.

Roloff went 2 for 3 with both hits going for extra bases. The native of Delafied, Wisconsin, set career highs with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Bloxdorf also had two hits in the game as the Franksville, Wisconsin, native, drove in two runs and scored one. Wolbert tacked on a hit and a RBI, while Novinska and Salvesen both had a hit and scored.

Landon Dessart (0-2) allowed five runs on six hits in his 2.2 innings. He struck out four batters before Chase Baker took over for an inning-and-one-third. Baker fanned two batters and gave up three runs and three hits. Braycen Burg tossed an inning and was tagged for a run, two hits, and one walk with a pair of whiffs. Camden Broske and Mason Sherman combined to pitch one inning and strike out two batters, with Broske allowing a run on one hit.
