Box Score The Madison College baseball team did the work they needed to do in the opening day of their sectional tournament. After defeating Illinois Valley Community College 6-2 earlier in the day, the WolfPack turned around and beat Sauk Valley Community College 7-1. The win means the WolfPack will have the advantage over the Eagles Sunday, needing to win only one game to Illinois Valley's two to claim the sectional crown.
Dan Schmidt, who pitched a complete game against the Skyhawks, got some early help from his offense against Sauk Valley. The 'Pack would put up a combined four runs in the game's first two innings.
In the first,
Luke Syens started the scoring with a double to right which brought in
Keith Browning. Three batters later,
Matt Cole singled down the left field line to score Syens and
Luke Yapp. It was 3-0 Madison College after the first frame.
Up 4-0 in the fourth, two more runs would score off the bat of
Joe Stubbe. Stubbe's single to center scored Syens and Browning, pushing the 'Pack's lead up to 6-0.
The final Madison College run came in the seventh, with the team leading 6-1.
Brandon Gibis singled to center to plate
Mike Jordahl, which would result in the final 7-1 score.
In his complete game victory, Schmidt struck out seven, gave up six hits and allowed just the one earned run. With the win, Schmidt improved to 6-2 on the season for the WolfPack.
Madison College (38-14, 11-1) will host Illinois Valley Community College tomorrow at noon, needing a win to advance to the NJCAA Region IV Regional Tournament. If a second sectional championship game is needed, it will be played roughly 30 minutes after the opening game ends.
