WolfPack softball plays itself into NJCAA Region IV Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Madison College softball team has made the NJCAA Region IV Tournament. To get there, the WolfPack had to get by Joliet Junior College, a team they swept in four games during the regular season. Wednesday, the 'Pack scored 14 total runs in two games against the Wolves, advancing after wins of 6-1 and 8-5.

Game one, Joliet Junior College took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third, but it wouldn't last. Madison College counterpunched with four runs in the bottom of the inning, all coming off one swing of the bat.

Paige Giese's grand slam home run in the third gave the WolfPack all the momentum they'd need. Madison College never looked back from that moment on.

The WolfPack would add two more runs; both coming off walks in the fifth, but it was unnecessary.

Bridget Jost (7-5) got credit for the 6-1 win. Jost struck out nine batters in seven innings of work, allowing just two hits and zero earned runs.

Game two, the bottom of the third was once again kind to the 'Pack. Just like they did in game one, the WolfPack would score four runs in the inning.

Tied 1-1, Nicole Hoffmann's single to right brought in Paige Giese and Megan Hanke, as Madison College took the 3-1 lead. Two batters later, Austann Abbott singled to bring in Hoffmann.

The Wolves would cut the Madison College lead to 5-3, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth frame, but it wouldn't matter. The WolfPack would score three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Hoffmann doubled to center to score Hanke, while Kasey Gutzmer's single to center plated Hoffmann. The result, an 8-3 Madison College lead.

Joliet Junior College tried to rally in the seventh, scoring two more runs in the inning, but then the 'Pack would shut them down.

Paige Giese (7-6) got the win for Madison College. Giese threw three and one-third innings, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs.

With the win, the WolfPack advanced to this weekend's NJCAA Region IV Tournament. Madison College will meet Rock Valley College at noon Friday. In their four prior meetings this season, the Golden Eagles won three games against the WolfPack.
