Box Score 2 A timely hit by
Dan Schmidt helped the 20th-ranked Madison College baseball team salvage a series split with Dakota County Technical College Wednesday. After falling 6-2 in game one of the doubleheader, Schmidt's single in the sixth inning of game two brought in the game-winning run in a 3-2 victory.
Game one, the Blue Knights got out to a hot start against the 'Pack. Dakota County scored five runs in the opening two innings, a hole that Madison College could never dig itself out of.
Meanwhile, the WolfPack offense would not get on the board until the bottom of the seventh inning. Trailing 6-0,
Sam Hurt singled to center to plate
Luke Syens. The team's very next batter,
Danny Krause, then singled to left to bring home
Joe Stubbe.
Nathan Hoffmann was charged with the loss. Hoffmann threw five innings, giving up 11 hits and two earned runs.
Game two, the Blue Knights would once again jump on the WolfPack early. After two innings, Dakota County found itself up 2-0. However, this time the 'Pack would rally back.
Still back 2-0 in the fifth, Madison College got their first run, as
Luke Syens came home following
Dylan Detert's steal of second base. A Blue Knights error in the sixth, which allowed
Danny Krause to touch home, would then set up
Dan Schmidt's late-game heroics.
Schmidt drove the first pitch he saw to center field for the single which would score
Keith Browning. Browning proved to be the game-winning run.
Marcellus Sneed got the win in relief for Madison College. Sneed, who threw one and one-third innings, gave up zero hits while striking out two batters.
The WolfPack (28-12, 8-0) will visit McHenry County College Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. So far this season, the Scots are 18-12 overall.
