WolfPack uses 22 hits, 24 runs to sweep Carl Sandburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Just one day after the Madison College baseball team saw their pitching staff steal the show, the WolfPack's offense exploded Sunday to pick up the sweep of Carl Sandburg College. Madison, scoring 24 runs on 22 hits, bested the Chargers by scores of 11-9 and 13-0.

Game one, the 'Pack put themselves in a huge deficit early. After scoring the game's opening run in the top of the first, Madison College surrendered nine runs in the first two innings against Carl Sandburg.

It wasn't until the fifth inning that the WolfPack would find their groove. Trailing 9-1, the team used four runs to put themselves within striking distance. RBI doubles by Pete Hofman and Dan Schmidt, along with RBI singles from Courtney Watkins and Joe Stubbe, would result in Madison College cutting the Chargers lead to 9-5.

That momentum carried over into the sixth inning, where the team would score six more runs. Watkins started things off with an RBI single to left to score Brandon Gibis and Liam Kellogg. A passed ball and a fielder's choice soon thereafter would tie the game at 9-9.

The game winning-run would come in the form of a Carl Sandburg error, as Schmidt would cross the plate. However, the WolfPack would add one more run just for good measure. Keith Browning's fielder's choice to short would bring in the game's final run, allowing Luke Syens to touch home.

The 11-9 victory marked the third straight win for Madison College since returning from their spring trip to Arizona. Dominick Golubiewski (2-0) was credited with the win for the WolfPack. Golubiewski threw three innings, giving up just one hit and zero earned runs.

Westin Wuethrich picked up his first save of the season for the 'Pack. Wuethrich threw the game's final inning, striking out two.

Watkins was the game's offensive star. In five at-bats, Watkins tallied three hits, three runs and three RBI.

Game two, things were never in doubt for Madison College. Not only did the WolfPack pick up 10 hits, but the Chargers would help beat themselves with six errors.

In the first, the 'Pack picked up two quick runs. Mike Jordahl had a sac fly to score Sam Hurt, followed by Keith Browning coming home on one of the previously mentioned errors by Carl Sandburg.

The team would then start to blow the game open in the third, scoring five runs in the inning. A Browning lead-off homer to left would spark the WolfPack's fire. Matt Cole and Liam Kellogg both accounted for an RBI single, while Brandon Gibis scored on an error and Browning would bring in a free run on a drawn walk.

One inning later, leading 7-0, Madison tacked on two more. After a two RBI single to left by Kellogg, Hurt had a sac fly to bring in Grant Alderman.

The WolfPack would polish off the Chargers in the fifth, scoring three more runs to seal the mercy. Cole doubled to left to allow Jordahl to cross the dish to make it 11-0. Then, after Cole got a free pass home off another Carl Sandburg error, Danny Krause singled to short to bring in Watkins.

Kyle Krings (1-0) was credited with his first victory of the season in the 13-0 win. Krings threw three innings of shutout baseball, striking out three and giving up zero hits.

Liam Kellogg accounted for a game-high three RBI, with Keith Browning and Matt Cole each adding two.

Madison College (10-5, 2-0) will travel to Kishwaukee College Wednesday, in what will be a makeup doubleheader from Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The WolfPack will play their home opener Thursday, April 3 when they host UW-Club in a single nine-inning game beginning at 5:30 p.m.
