Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 In their first action since returning from a spring trip to Arizona, the Madison College baseball team looked solid Saturday afternoon. The WolfPack swept their first conference opponent of the season, Triton College, winning by scores of 5-2 and 2-0.
Game one,
Danny Krause helped the 'Pack get on the board in the third inning. A single to center scored
Mike Jordahl, giving Madison College the 1-0 lead.
The WolfPack lead would grow in the fifth.
Pete Hofman's sac fly to right field brought in
Brandon Gibis, leading to a 2-0 Madison advantage on the scoreboard.
Corey Fischer (2-1) contained the Trojans offense with his work on the mound. Fischer threw six strong innings, giving up just two hits and zero earned runs, while striking out three batters.
It would remain 2-0 until the seventh, when the 'Pack put forth their best offensive inning in the game. Following
Luke Syens scoring off a Triton error, Krause would once again come through for Madison College. Another single to center by the reigning All-American would result in Hofman and
Courtney Watkins touching the plate, as the 'Pack took a commanding 5-0 lead.
Calen Rohrman came in to close the game for Madison College in the seventh. Though he did give up two unearned runs, the sophomore was able to do just that, inducing a ground out to short for the game's final out. The 5-2 win marked Madison's first conference win of the season.
Game two,
Rex Morrow (2-0), who threw a no-hitter down in Arizona, provided another brilliant pitching performance against the Trojans. Morrow, like Fischer before him, threw six shutout innings. His final stat line read five hits, zero runs, one walk and six strikeouts.
Thanks to Morrow's pitching prowess, the 'Pack would need only one inning of offense to pick up the victory and sweep of Triton College. With the game tied at zero in the third,
Luke Yapp singled to left to score
Danny Krause. Then,
Dan Schmidt brought in
Luke Syens with his own single to left. The two runs were all that the WolfPack would need.
Marcellus Sneed picked up the save in the seventh and final inning. Sneed, facing just four batters, allowed only one hit. When it was all over, the scoreboard read 2-0 Madison College.
With the sweep, the WolfPack improved their record to 8-5 overall, 2-0 in conference play. Tomorrow, the team will visit Carl Sandburg College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
