Box Score They put up a tremendous fight, but the Madison College baseball team couldn't quite dig themselves out of a nine-run deficit Thursday. Trailing 10-1 entering the ninth inning of their game against Scottsdale Community College (Ariz.), the WolfPack scored six runs to make things interesting, but eventually fell by the final of 10-7.
The Fighting Artichokes were on fire early against the 'Pack. Scottsdale scored six runs in the game's first three innings, followed by another four combined in the fourth and fifth.
Madison's first run of the game came in the top of the fifth, as a
Dan Schmidt single allowed
Danny Krause to score. The run cut the Artichokes lead to 8-1.
Back 10-1 in the ninth, the 'Pack would try to put on their rally caps. After
Keith Browning scored on a passed ball, a Scottsdale error would bring in
Pete Hofman to make it 10-3. After a
Luke Syens' single brought in
Liam Kellogg, and Schmidt touched home after another passed ball, Madison College was back 10-5.
The WolfPack's final two runs would be scored off the bat of
Keith Browning. A Browning single would score Syens and
Luke Yapp, putting Madison College back just three, but that's where the rally would end.
The WolfPack's very next batter, Hofman, would strike out looking for the game's final out.
Nathan Hoffmann took the loss for Madison College. Hoffmann allowed seven earned runs in four and one-third innings, walking three and striking out two.
In the loss, the WolfPack would collect 10 hits. Browning led the way for Madison College with two RBI on two hits.
Tomorrow, the 'Pack (4-5) will square off with two fellow Wisconsin schools. The team meets UW-Superior JV at 11 a.m. Friday, before taking on Concordia University JV at 2 p.m.
